Interesting Video On Mower Deck Spindles

I notice that on pillow block bearings but never thought it applied to deck spindles.

So how many deck spindles are like that? Some, most, a few?

I thought the video was going to mention the belt ripper that my JD belly deck had. Little tabs under the spindle pulleys probably designed to shed debris, but would make short work of an expensive belt if it popped off.

The Deeres like that have sealed on the top and open in the bottom. His was apart before I'd think. I still replace lots as people wash them. That being said, there are spindles you pull apart and they still have the seals intact.

There is a reason to grease spindles with sealed bearings. It keeps water out of the spindles and cools the bearings.

The top bearing still doesn稚 get any grease in it. If you pumped the cavity full of grease to actually push grease in the top bearing then you?*e going to push the seals out. I think quality sealed bearings are the better way...............................

Maybe so in most homeowner mowers, however in a commercial mower like (Kubota F3060 for example), the deck spindle upper seal is "VHY dust seal, no spring" and will be installed lip pointing up.

I.E. it will let out old grease as needed.

The lower seal is a SB type (with spring), and will be installed lip pointing up.

The grease fitting is at the top end of the spindle shaft.

PS. These roller bearings are the same size & type as a very common boat trailer wheel bearings are!

I pulled a spindle from the x744 62c deck and the bearings had no seals. Instead, the separate seals were mounted outboard of the bearings and they rode on a bushing. Bearings top to bottom were well lubed and looked like they should last for a long time. (similar to the above ^ drawing) The deck on the CC 982 has tapered roller bearings and will outlast me.

Mine exploded a few weeks back.. I bought one thru the "Walmart" site & don't remember where it came from.{co. name}
It DID have a grease fitting on it.. So I greased it & installed it..
& like everybody does, I gave it a spin before putting the belt on..
That sunofab. wobbled about 1-2 inchs.!! so I took it back out & started swapping parts from the old one..
I got all the way down to THE SHAFT.!! I put the old shaft in & the "wobble" went away.!!
THAT was amazing.. that shaft is about 2-3 inches if solid steel.!!??
Anyway, I cleaned up the old shaft & reinstalled the Franken Spindle assembly.. All is good..
