Condition is far more important than make or model.
Just don't expect good mileage or much highway speed.

I drove one when i was visiting family in Canada for some weeks, while collecting fill for their new patio.. It had no brakes, first i didnt get the inversed 1 to 2 shifting (it couldnt get from 1 to 3, not even when playing with the 2 speed rear end) it was noisy and used a lot of gas.
Later i think they threw the cab, engine, tranny and front axle away, and bent the frame beams together to convert it into a tractor drawn trailer, because the fuel consumption off-road wasnt that pretty... I'd guess it was a 10 ton GVW model...

How true it is!

They were a solid truck in their day, but the last one was built in 1978 or 1979. I drove a 1962 and a 1966 Loadstar 1700 series and a 1963 1600 back in the late '60's. The '66 had the 345 V8, the others the 304 V8. They were rough riding but highly manoeuverable and they did outlast the GM's and Fords in the fleet. They were hard on gas, but so was everything else. Things have come a long way since then.

I drove a new '76 1600 w/345 and a '79 w/392 V8's. Luckily they were company trucks because fuel mileage was very low. The engines are very tough, trucks drove good and would top out around 65-70 mph. Both trucks had a 5 speed trans w/two speed rear axles.

I hope I can help you with your search jandm. I am the general manager for a heavy duty truck repair co. in West Chester PA. We have a customer that has a IH that I believe is in the year range you are looking for. We put a Jasper gas rebuild in it two years ago and they only used it for a few months then had us remove the boring machine from it and put it on a new Pete. It has been sitting in our yard since then and both of us are looking to move it out. They don't owe us for any of the work and I believe it has a clean title. It and is in good condition, probably only has about 500 miles on the rebuild. It is a tandem axle, AWD with no body on it. I'm sure you can get it for a real reasionable price.
I am new to this site and have not registered my stats. If you are interesed you can e-mail me at jeldredge@eldredgeco.com, I can provide you with the rest of the information.
Good luck with you search.

I have two of them, one parts and one's my winter plow truck.

The 345 is a really good engine but it doesn't make a lot of power. It's not too bad MPGwise. If you're going to buy it for yard use then it'll be fine. It would also make a good truck for an occasional trip to the dump or gravel pit. I don't think you'd want to use it for hauling dirt all day long though. Mine started off with a 345 but now has a 446 in it. I pulled it from a second 1700 I bought from a local fire department. It ran great so I did the engine swap for some extra power. Both of mine are 4wd so they don't have a 2 speed rear axle.

Way back when I put a good many miles on some R190's. I forget the year and model now but I moved up to one with the 549 gas engine in it. Ran good but with a vacuum shift 2 speed rear, a mistake had you at a stop.

I had a late 60's 1700 I think it was with the 345, 5sp, 2sp rear. I had intentions of using farm plates for an occasional chore out on the road but I ended up never leaving the farm with it. I just used it to move soil around the property. Overall, it ran good once I rebuilt the governed carb. An old municiiple truck, it came with a 10' plow but no power steering. Talk about a bear with that plow hanging on the truck!

Don't figure on using one as a primary vehicle to make a living.

My brother in law had International dump when he was in the demolition business. Don't know the model or year.

He used it until it was pretty much worn out and then something (2 speed axle I think) quit. Not thinking it was worth fixing he stuck a for sale sign in the window. Stopped in a bar to have a beer. 2 Mexicans came in wanting to know who owned the truck and how much.

$3500 Thinking they would talk him down. 1 Of them peeled off the $$$ and handed it to him. He said if they followed him to the house he'd get the title for him.

No Need for a title, we are on our way to Mexico. About a 70 mile drive.

International trucks are 1 of the most popular in Mexico. If you have ever been there they make them look bigger than they actually are. Huge tires, a front bumper that would pull a train and very often, what looks like big knives mounted to the wheels. They drive like they own the road and no one argues with them.

For the right price I'd sell mine but that 446 gets low single digit MPG and with the gearing it's not going to do interstate speeds.
