Internet Explorer question (problem)

Hi Richard,

You can post it, but there is no need to. All you have to do is eliminate all but the first line reference... as I described. It will either work, or not.

Or you could send it to me as an attachment, and I will edit, and send it back.

BTW, did you run AdAware or similar spyware removal tool???

I've run adaware before. I've not done it often. If it happens to be a paid version, then I don't have THAT version... I'd only have the freeware version. I think I'll search it out & run it again.

The reason I asked about posting the HOST file here is it has ... well, I'll just post it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

HOST file: (the "#" signs are part of the file and not inserted by me)

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Your hosts file is okay. Sometimes spyware "registers" itself in there and intercepts various activities and redirects away. That can cause the behavior you have described.

Next I would get the Spybot's Search & Destroy and run it. It is free, and considered to be one of the best. It will likely find a bunch of stuff. Let it "fix" whatever problems it finds. Then run IE again, and see if it is any better.

I would also highly recommend Microsoft's own Anti spyware. It's also free, and it works very well.

Microsoft's Anti-spyware is a feature of XP I believe and not earlier versions. But it is good.
