Hello All,

I live where I can not get cable access, and the cell reception is terrible. My kids now use the internet for school projects, so I need to do something. I know satellite internet does not get good reviews, but it is my only option. Any opinions on Wild Blue or Hughesnet? Anything, or any other options I'm missing?

Thanks.

Jim

Phone provider doesn't offer DSL? We went that route instead of satellite. It isn't the fastest, but it sure beats the H@ll out of dial-up

check to see if there is broadband coverage in the area.. usually a couple different providers.

i have been in areas where my AT&T cell service is nill.. but my sprint broadband is strong.

past that.. satellite..

Hughesnet?

I seem to remember a thread on another topic where one of the Alaska guys is up on Hughesnet. Can't remember the thread though... I'd wait for that individual to come up on the 'Net and get their opinion.

Just a thought...

We have Hughes net for years. It is expensive for what it delivers but much better than dial up. There is a limit on downloads over 24 hours based on a package you buy. We have 375 MB/24 hours at $75/month. When you go over the limit speed slows down to crawl. Downloads made from 1 AM EST to 5 AM EST don't count toward the total. Download speed especially at night is OK but it might be slow during the day. Upload speed sucks 24/7.
I am trying to get on G3/4 broadband but it still not available in our area.

I use Verizon's "hot spot", of course you need to get their signal. Sprint is here, but It putts me in the "roam" category.
I have the plan with the 5 gig limit, but they also have a 10 for about $80

Eddie Walker can give you his perspective on Hughesnet if he see's this thread.

If you get a cell signal, BOOST the signal with an AMP or an antenna. Then visit AT&T, Sprint and Verizon coverage maps for technology.

All are engaged in upgrades from a technology called EVDO (3G) to LTE (4G) including WiFi off their cell towers.

These technologies are far better than satellite, lower latency, and are approachong cable speeds. I'd seriously consider them, IF, you get a cell signal.

I'm been on Hughesnet for nearly three years. No real gripes, only problem was about a year ago the modem went out and they replaced it. Wireless internet wasn't very good in this area when I went with Hughesnet but things are rapidly improving. I'd check into wireless before I'd commit to Hughesnet. Hughesnet's not bad but like what was said it's expensive for what you get. I'm going to be checking into what ATT and Verizon is offering in wireless, at some point I think it'll be worth switching from satellite.
