Well I finally got around to using my "Mr Funnel" for the first time. I ran 5 gals of fuel threw it and look what I found. Is it possible this is all water or since it is winter did I pull out some of the anit-geling added to it? If this is all water no wonder it smokes so bad at start up.

I recollect reading a post that recommended putting diesel anti-gel directly into the tractors fuel tank and not into the diesel storage can when using the Mr. Funnel. I don't remember the exact technical explanation why......

.......I did a search on Mr. Funnel and found a post by Kiotijohn:

<font color="blue"> There is always some water, but I treat the tractor tank with Power Service AFTER filling, because if you put the PS in first, it emulsifies the water molecules and the Mr. Funnel won't filter it out. John

Yes I saw that too. But I didn't put anything into the fuel so did the local convience store do it and if so should I dump this stuff back into the tank of the tractor to mix with what it was originally mixed for?

Murph, I can't really tell from the pictures, although they look like great photography, but in the pictures, it just looks like diesel fuel to me. You do know, don't you, that the design of the funnel leaves a little bit of whatever you're pouring through it in the bottom, whether there's anything wrong with it or not.

Bird,

It does have a tint to it like it could be diesel fuel. I have re-ran it back through the funnel three times and none of that will go through. Not even one drop? The thing I am worried about is if that is all anti-geling I could be in trouble if I leave or am working outside for a long time.

There will always be some liquid left in the Mr Funnel after fueling your tractor. Sometimes it will contain water, sometimes not. What I do is simply recycle the cup or so of liquid that remains in the funnel unless there is visible water.

The blue/green filter requires a certain head pressure in order to operate. When the funnel is almost empty there is insufficient head pressure to flow anything thru the filter. Conversely, too much head pressure will cause water to flow thru the filter.

So either dump it out and put back into the storage can?

Yep. You an always throw it away or you can save it in a small bottle and wait for any water to settle and then drain off the diesel on top. At about $2 per gallon a couple of cups per 5 gallons will add up quickly if you use a lot of fuel.

Yeah...I just tried mine about a week ago & had similar results. Was not sure what to do the first time so dumped it in a container. When I did that, the colour still looked like diesel & when I smelled it of couse was DIESEL. So the next fill I just dumped it back in my fuel container. If it is water, should filter out next time.

The Mr. Funnel is separating the diesel fuel from the home heating oil that was mixed in by mistake. I would put the home heating oil into my homes heating oil system and only use the diesel fuel portion in my tractor. If you paid road tax on this home heating oil, I suggest that you apply for a refund on the home heating oil portion of the purchased diesel fuel. Hope that this clears up the mystery for you... Junk.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It also could have been separating the dino diesel from the synthetic diesel. The funnel senses which type is already in the tank (You do know that you can use synthetic diesel right from the beginning, don't you?) and only allows that through. If you pull the Mr. Funnel filter material apart and analyze it with a scanning electron microscope (everyone who uses diesel fuel must have one of these or at least send your filters out for analysis. I used to send my filters out for analysis, but since I do this hourly, it made sense to just buy one of my own microscopes.), you will see that that the RTB is much higher than 7.237, which indicates that it's a high quality Group 47 fuel. Additionally, the residue from the filter debris will show (trust me on this) high content of carbon particulates which proves, yes, I said proves, that using a Group 47 fuel is best choice. Therefore, the only fuel I have ever used is Group 47 fuel and I have used it in all my tractors, cars, trucks, lawn mowers, RC cars, helicopters, locomotives and weed whackers for over 10 years. Using Group 47 fuel in my locomotive has proven particularly advantageous since it pulls the tanker car filled with Group 47 fuel I keep parked in my back yard. Group 47 fuels and higher (there are grades up to Group 297 - I will address those in a my WebBlog at dieselfuelminutiaeandwhyyoushouldcare.org) I have never had to add any additives to my fuel either. Through extensive testing, and this is just my experience mind you, I could not whack any more weeds using an additive, the helicopter could not fly any higher, the RC cars were not any faster, etc. with an additive in the fuel. See my WebBlog additivesandwhyyoudonotneedthem.org for additional test results. In conclusion, murph, your Mr. Funnel is working perfectly. It is keeping the dino diesel out of your fuel tank and only allowing the synthetic diesel fuel in. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But seriously, I have 2 Mr. Funnels and they never caught any water in my fuel and since they proved to be a pain to use, they're gathering dust in the garage. I buy my diesel from a place that's right off an Interstate and next to a truck stop, so it sells plenty of diesel, ensuring that the fuel is fresh and winter blend is there in plenty of time before winter. I also add (shhhh don't tell anyone this and don't say it too loud) PowerService into the container before I fill them. I agree with Bird, what's in that glass looks like diesel fuel. But, despite the preceding paragraph, I've been wrong before. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Murph, dump whatever is in mr funnel into your waste oil and dispose of it. or if you need fire started for burning brush... Don't dump it back into the tank.

You know I never did get any instructions with the funnel. But I should have gone to the website and read more about it. I guess typical male, only read the instructions if you have problems.

Murph........ I know that this is going to be a difficult question for you to answer, but what direction was the tractor facing when you were refueling it. I do know that the magnetic pull of the North Pole has a dramatic effect on the way a Mr. Funnel works and if you don't have the tractor properly oriented, in relationship of the filling location on the tractor with the filling station tanks directional location you can have some cross contamination of the molecules and the molecular striations of the gelling products of combustion that might not want to align properly to go through the filter. I suggest that you get a GPS unit and locate exactly where all of these point are on a map and then get the tractor located properly. Also, don't forget the altimeter, since the elevation of the difference will make for a more difficult time in pouring the heavier viscous materials from the plastic container.... This is a summation of the instruction that were on the Mr. Funnel that I received. I might have missed a few points, because I don't have the two volumes of instructions with me at present, but this should be sufficient to get you headed down the correct path of fueling the tractor.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

MikePA & Junkman,

How could you guys forget about the 0.33333 critical mass ratio of EDTD (Ethanol-Di-Thymel-Diesel) to TMAD (Tri-Methyl-Alpha-Diesel). If this ratio is exceeded by 0.675 neutrons, an exothermic reaction will take place within the combustion chamber releasing the equivalent of 2 sticks of dynamite !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Personally, I gave up on the Mr. Funnel when I found it completely missed the demunusification (dm3sr2) residue left behind be the 5 gal can of fuel I found on the side of the road. bw

This is the first intelligent discussion of diesel fuel that I have seen in nearly 4 years. I sure hope that others will help the newbies to learn some other interesting facts about the properties of diesel fuel that have been clouded over in past discussions.

well , not really a newbie here . But I find this particular discussion one of the most fact packed that I have ever read on this board /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Btw , I do find that packing my MR. Funnel with used dental floss helps in separating out The dino and synthetic diesel fuel to some small degree . It also allows me to reuse my stanadyne fuel treatment . John

It all looks like diesel fuel to me. If it were me I would just pour it into my tank or if I felt paranoid I would mix it in with my returned oil from an oil change. If you are concerned about the diesel in the tank of your machine just add some conditioner. Overconditioning is not a problem.
