Invasive Plant versus Pretty Landscaping

Yes, Himalayan blackberries are a hobby of mine..... I can keep them beat back with repeat mowing and cutting. Good and bad, the berries are fairly prolific and taste good.

... and the cane toad that was supposed to kill them, now we have all three.
The list goes on and on just as I am sure it does in the US and all/most introduced by well intentioned forebears.

Yep, we have our list and the Cane Toad is on said list. They imported the danged things into South Florida to eat bugs going after Sugar Cane. The Cane Toad did not eat the bugs eating Sugar Cane but they eat other things, I think native frogs were one of the victims, and thus hurting the environment. The Cane Toads poison and kill dogs and cats because of the toxins in the back. Course some nuts have figured out that licking the Cane Toads back can make them stoned. Always had to laugh at the idea of some nut liking a toad.:laughing::laughing: Saw a program that nuts in Australia would pick up Cane Toads that had been run over on the roads and then tried out so they could process them the toxin to get them stoned.:rolleyes:

Later,
Dan

A Himalayan Blackberry infestation is a real pain. They can grow nearly 2 stories high and the canes can spread 30 feet in a year.
I never heard of them until now. And I thought our Japanese Knotweed, Multi-flower Rose, and Autumn Olive were really bad!

And the problem with all these invasive plants is that it is so wide spread and very little effort to control any of it. Other than a few individual landowners attempting to control it on their own properties. And I do mean attempting, never entirely eradicating it as hard as we try.

We have both Scotch (or French) Broom and Himalayan berries. I'd rather have the berries. The berries are tasty and they're much easier to eradicate. The only good thing about broom is that when it's small and the ground's not dried up too much in summer you can pull it out. And the flowers are pretty. That's probably why it's sold as an ornamental.

My wife just this year realized that the "native" grass here is mostly cheat, an invasive species. She wants to get rid of it because it's invading her garden and of course as I clear brush and force a return to an oak woodland there's going to be more of it outside the garden. I don't think that anything short whatver it is that the phone company sprays around their poles will get rid of it.

The same goes for what ever the utility companies use to kill ALL the vegetation (grass, brush, and trees) growing under their power transmission lines.

Then again, I think most people would be horrified if they knew the concoction and concentration of the chemical mix that is used.

2,4,5,T was great when it was available decades ago. Mix it with diesel fuel and water, whoo boy!

"killed everything, even the rocks . . . "

Now that was some real powerful stuff. Is that the same thing as getting stoned? :D

Reminds me of:
Western world, get stoned, commit adultery
Middle east, commit adultery, get stoned
