Invisible dog fence wire substitute

our husky didn't care much for the underground wire ... she would run clear past it ... then on the return trip at a slower pace ... would either bugger off or sit there howling at the perimeter

Our labs would respect the invisible fence in most situations.

The big problem was neighborhood kids playing ball, any kind of ball, within sight of the dogs. The fence was no match for the fun of playing ball.

I had considered the electronic fence, but the more I researched, the less I liked it, especially being off grid and needing to power it all the time. I also didn't like the idea that the dog gets punished for coming back in the yard. So I decided to get Petsafe PDT00-10603 Yard-and-Park Remote Trainer, good for about 400 yards about 2 years ago. 95% of the time, the "bad tone" is all I need to use. 3 of my adult dogs have their own collar now.

JImmj,

I kinda agree with Schmism in that an electric fence may be a bit of work and money for little results with your special dog.

I,too, had two mixed breed dogs, part lab, hound, and pit, that really liked to jump my electric fence. My training was ineffective in the long run. I got much better results training them with a collar/transmitter in hand. Good luck.

That is my feeling too but not my wife's. You know, SWMBO. I work at a pet company and got the fencing unit and 3 spools of wire very cheap because they were damaged (packaging only and could no longer be sold, it's crazy what goes on). What we do to keep the boss happy! :confused2:

im installing a stubborn dog fence tonite...

the amt of work and money on this stupid *** dog is killing me..he chews everything when we lock him in ht garage at nite cuz he wants out and then runs off if we dont keep him tied up outside..hopin the fence will help..its that or traffic that is gonna make the issues go away

175 for the unit and 112 for 3 more rolls of wire to keep him i a decent area we already got fenced in with barb wire for the cow

I can't help much with the price of wire. I searched for a long time and could never really beat the $30 - $40 price on amazon. But I did find a way to save on splices. Instead of paying for the special waterproof splices I just use a regular wire nut stuffed with petroleum jelly. Works great for my 4 acres or so of fencing.

Always tie a loose small knot ( square not is fine ) in the wire before putting the ends into the wire nut. That way if the wire is yanked for some reason the stress is born by the wire itself and not the splice.

If you are like me and need some of the wire to be above ground then I highly recommend going for the heavier gauge stuff.
