We are going to install our old buried dog fence system at our new house. I'd like to know if it would be cheaper just to bury some wire at a regular electrical supplier rather than buying the Radio Fence brand stuff.
Does anyone know what type or grade wire it is?
Where would be a good place to buy it?
The information with our unit doesn't provide any specs - probably so people will only buy their wire.

shade,
The Pet Safe brand wire is either 16 or 18awg with a PVC coating. I suppose you could use 16 or even 14awg THWN/THHN. If it's THWN, it is good for a wet location.

When we installed our fence,I bought a 2500 ft. roll of Teflon Coated 18 ga. for about 100 bucks.Much cheaper when buying from Elect.Supplier....Havn't had any problems yet,3 years old.

Bought an Innotek system that came with 500 feet of 20 ga. wire (CT-400a Contain and Train). Innotek's extra "Boundary Kit" includes 500 feet of 18 or 20 ga. wire, 50 flags and 2 waterproof splices for about $50. Instead, I went to Home Depot and bought 14 ga. wire for about $12 (500 feet), some splices ($3, look like normal electric connectors, but have silicone in them), and some survey flags ($6 for 100 flags). I needed 3 rolls to do about 1.5-2 acres. The system works great.

Last year I put in an Innotek system to keep three hounds in the back yard. So far no problems - great customer service! I was told that the 20 ga. wire had a special coating and that I should buy any additional wire (to fence in the rest of our 10 acres) from Innotek rather then use an underground rated wire. But, it appears that some folks here have had good luck with using underground wire... I'll have to give it a try.

Good luck, Doug

I have used 18g stranded THHN electrical wire with great success.
