Hey guys,

I did a search but can't find anything on the forum.

I'm looking for some info on invisible fence for a dog.

Some particular questions I have:

How close to the fence can the dog get before they get a shock? Is this distance adjustable by a power setting?

I have some areas where it would be better if the fence was above ground (e.g. over a creek, through the woods...). Is this OK to do? If so, how high up can I go and still have it work?

How much distance (wire) can be run?

I'm thinking of setting up 2 perimeters. One that will keep the dog in the back yard, the other would be more extended (over the creek, into the woods, front of house...). Technically, couldn't I put a switch near the controller to establish the perimeter? How much would this screw up the dog (mess with his mind not knowing the perimeter I have set)?

Any help appreciated.

Brian, I can tell you from experience that the invisible fences I looked at required the dog to weigh 8 pounds. The lovely Mrs_Bob has a dog that weighs 6 pounds. The best solution I could come up with to use an invisible fence with her dog was to put a 2 pound shock collar on it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Brian,

I did a search and found out I had to turn off the cloaking mechanism so the invisible posts would once again become visible.

hmm.......Since these posts are invisible my link does not recognize them, so I copied and pasted the page below....

The only experience I have with invisible fencing is through a neighbor that had one in the city. They had two perimeters set up. One for the front yard and one for the back yard. The only way to go from one perimeter to the other was through the house. The dog learned that if he was let out the front door, he was in the front yard perimeter. If he was let out the back door, he was in the back yard perimeter. I am interested to hear how this would work over your acreage.
I can remember this dog getting within 6 or 8 feet of the fence but I never saw it get shocked. This was a pretty passive dog that just layed in the yard. Nothing really got him stirred up.

I use the invisible fence in conjunction with a regular fence. My dog had a high pain tolerance and found that he could just run fast and take the hit. The fence slows him down enough to make the attempt to get out more painful. I run the wire about 1-2 feet off the ground so I don't hit it with the weedwacker or other tools and it is easier to find any breaks in the wire.

You can tune the range of the systems. Try googling "pet containment system" and you should find web sites for most of the vendors - I think there are only really 2-3 systems on the market. The systems usually come with training flags that are supposed to let the dog know where the fence is. I suspect for most smaller dog breeds this would work fine. My smaller dog (65 lbs) obey'ed the flags but of course she wasn't the "problem" dog either.

The system I have beeps as the dog startss to get close to the fence and only shocks them when they ignore the beep. When my big dog was young I had to use a remote shock collar on him and it worked well because it had a beep button and a shock button that sounded the same. The only downside of the beep then shock system is that my dog gets a little nervous when anything digital makes a similar beeping sound. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I only really contain my dog to a smaller area of the yard during the times when I am not around. When I'm outside (or my wife and kids) then we let the dogs out of the dog area. It's easier to keep a small dog area clean, safe, and maintained then trying to fence in a whole 5 acres.

It depends on the dog as to how well the system will work. The first two years of puppyhood are always hard times to control but they are the most fun too.

Brian,

We have used underground dog fencing for almost 15 years...we first started out with a systme from Dog Guard, and just last year (due to tech advances and a stubborn Dobe) we purchased a Radio Fence system from Radio Fence link. On the right side of the page is a lot of info that may answer a lot of your questions as well.

The answers below pertain to the Radio Fence brand, but i'm sure the other systems are comparable.

( How close to the fence can the dog get before they get a shock? Is this distance adjustable by a power setting?)
here's a reply from them on the range... "The min. recommended is 5 feet on each side of the wire for a total of 10 feet. You can max. out at about 25 feet max"

( I have some areas where it would be better if the fence was above ground (e.g. over a creek, through the woods...). Is this OK to do? If so, how high up can I go and still have it work?)
My wire is running on top of the ground the whole way, held in place with sod staples (my wife changes her mind all the time about where the wire should run). I would guess much more than a foot off the ground may reduce the effectiveness of the system.

( How much distance (wire) can be run?)
They claim distances of up to 25 acres.

( I'm thinking of setting up 2 perimeters. One that will keep the dog in the back yard, the other would be more extended (over the creek, into the woods, front of house...). Technically, couldn't I put a switch near the controller to establish the perimeter? How much would this screw up the dog (mess with his mind not knowing the perimeter I have set)?)
You can set up multiple zones, but every time you move or change a zone perimeter, you really should re-flag the area.

Hope this helps...
Mark

Thanks for the info everyone.

I'll dig around a little more using the advice provided.

The containment fence in my yard isn't the issue. I and the dog, both have that down pat.

I need to wire a switch to his mouth, so that if anything enters it, it triggers the collar. Other than when I turn it off so he can eat. heheh /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I replaced a garage door on my workshop this past weekend, and had the old door and boxing material for the new one all neatly stacked in my little 6'x8' trailer, ready to take to the dump whenever I got a chance. I got home yesterday evening and what used to be (2) 8' x 12' pieces of cardboard are now in pieces no bigger than 2 inches and are scattered all over the back yard. He had to have jumped up on top of the trailer, navigated the old splintered door and metal track to drag the cardboard off the top.

My sister and her family have a place out side of Durango, Colorado. Lots of city folks building around them. One neighbor put up an invisible fence to keep the deer out /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif And were complaining to my sister that they were junk and did not work. Not sure what they expected, a forcefield maybe ?

Ben,

They must be the same people that requested the "Deer Crossing" sign be moved down the road so the deer didn't cross near there house anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
