Interesting thought I had. While the intruder left them alone and was going around the house were they obligated to "retreat" and run away? I know jumping on my scooter or wheelchair might be possible I doubt I could out run him or a bullet. In PA I would be covered by the castle law, however, in a state that requires retreat rather than allowing the use of deadly force how would this be seen?

Dont run from a crook with a gun. They have no morals already, they wouldnt bat an eye about shooting you in the back either.

Reading over the story, these folks were lucky. First off, the perp did not kill them when he forced his way in and then he left them alone long enough for the husband to retrieve his shotgun. Home defense needs to start with some kind of early warning system so you have time to grab that weapon of choice.
