Iowa vs The Astro Dome

In Greensboro, N.C, they sent a bus down from a church to pick people up. ONE person came back.

I've read where people are complaining that they have to be in line for services (people from the disaster). Had to laugh. Join the military.

Lets see, everything you own is gone, and your being offered relief, but you have to wait.

The red cross was offering "cash vouchers" (sp?) and they had to "cancel" the "line" due to confusion.

This is me being pesimestic (sp?), but people are somthing else.

Let the games begin.

Aint America grand?

(by the way, I honestly belive that the U.S IS the greatest country in the world. People being people and the right to complain here makes it even better!) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A few years ago a fast food restaurant study was performed to determine how long people would wait before they got anxious. The time was 6 seconds!

Thats my point Bob. People take so much for granted in this country that it's pathetic (sp?).

For myself, if this "disaster" hit my home, I would take what the goverment would offer me (and if it were "free" I would not complain), but if you want somthing done, do it yourself.

God helps those who help themselves.

I kind of felt sorry for those people having to deal with the government. I can remember from my youth getting layed off and having to stand on line at the unemployment office. I'm sorry sir this line is for people whose name begins with B only. I'm sorry sir this form isn't filled out correctly you'll have to go to the back of the line and start over. I'm sorry sir according to your birthdate you'll have to come back wed. It sounds like the bureaucrats down there are even more extra screwed up. Do they get a bonus for every person who throws down their paperwork and runs out crying? I heard they were going to mail out debit cards later in the week. Hows that work when your house floated off down the mississippi? Just anchor your boat to where the mailbox used to be I'm sure the mailman will find you. Are the mailmen even delivering the mail down that way? Shoot I hope this isn't too political.

They were not mailing them out, they were handing them out to the evacuees at the Astrodome. They've since changed from debit cards to giving them checks. BTW, the Astrodome has it's own post office and ZIP code.

I heard an interview with victums as thay left an abandoned Wal-mart in Mississippi where FEMA had set up a reginal center. They had been hoping for some quick cash to help make ends meet and maybe buy some shingles. No joy but plenty of paperwork and confusion. Thats kind of been my experience when dealing with government. I hope you all will forgive me but I feel a senior moment coming on. Lets take a trip down memory lane. Many years ago I used to live in Mattews NC. The city office was run by two wonderful old ladies. I had a problem with the sewer, The next day the sent out a city worker who straightened out the problem and showed me how to fix it if it ever happened again. Anyway I always compare government services to the services in Mattews. Most of the time where I live now government services begin with the words I'm sorry sir. If you walked into that office in Mattews those two ladies were going to help you even if the only thing they could do for you was offer you a cup of coffee. People make the difference.

Maybe the wife needs to find a way to lock the computer so I can't wake up in the middle of the night and get at it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There have been some news stories of late about various businesses which managed to get low interest loans (or maybe direct grants) from the funds intended to help enterprises adversely affected by 9/11. Some of those companies are here in Missouri. That was a small pot compared to what will come down for Katrina's aftermath. I hope the truely affected get what they need, and the scumbags who skim that aid get what they deserve.

At an individual level, government employees' jobs are to follow procedure. If, by following procedure, you happen to help someone, that is just great, but helping someone is not necessarily the priority. Hopefully, the people thousands of miles away who invented these procedures have actually spent time in the trenches.

The Cost Guard has rightfully been praised for their decisive action in this disaster. It was also noted that they have a reputation for doing what appears to be appropriate and getting permission later.

It is better to beg for forgivness than to ask for permission (sp)! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Interesting, they "mandated" that all firearms are now illegal in the city of N.O.

Have you ever noticed that some people say yes and some people say no? At my current town office the ladies up front seen to be no people, I'm sorry sir but you will have to submit your request in writing in tripliquet to the office of the director and it may take as long as 10 weeks and be subject to review by the commisioner, the chief of police and our solicitor. And if your request is approved you will need to pay all the fees in cash would you like to leave a nonrefundable deposit today... If this incohearant rample has any point it is that the individual people can make it work or screw you up and sometimes they decide,
