Hello everyone and thanks in advance for your help.

Raised in rural NE Iowa (pretty, hill country) and now living near Ames, IA.

Both the wife and I love country living, hunting, and the cold and snow. Weird, I know.

We are looking at moving to Alaska after a couple of years. We are researching and developing our plans.
She plans to be a MidWife (knows more than some of the docs around here) and I am looking at getting into farming.

So hello fellow Iowans and hello to any Alaskans.
Especially in the Delta Junction and Fairbanks area.

This could end up being an interesting thread.

And welcome!

You might try a "Wanting to move to Alaska" thread in Rural living.

G'day Mate and welcome, anyway, to TBN from Downunder. (which is South and nowhere near Iowa or Alaska)

Enjoy the site.

I take it that you will be driving up to Alaska and was wondering if you have gotten the Alaskan Highway book The Milepost yet? When you start to really plan your trip, you should get one. Amazon normally has it on sale but you can get at Barnes & Noble or other book stores.

I made that drive in February which can be fun for someone who likes cold weather. The nice thing about going up in the winter is that there is a lot less traffic. In the summer months there are a lot of tourist driving big RVs and it is much slower going. The big difference is that in the winter there will be a lot less daylight. In fact, the further north you get, the days will get shorter and shorter.

You're welcome... although I can't, personally, take credit for the breed. :eek:ath:

Heck, I didn't even know about the austrolorp chook (chook = chicken in Aussie 'speak') until you mentioned it. Had to look it up and, therefore, learnt something today.

I grew up raising those chickens. Best layers and such a gentle bird.
They hold the worlds record for egg laying.
347 eggs in 365 days.
Winter hardy too.
We have 6 little chicks in a pen right now in our house. Great for the kids.

I will look into that, thanks
