IP of a network device via cross connect rj45?

Arp and Rarp are query/lookup protocols only. They either lookup MAC from IP address (Arp) or lookup IP address from MAC (Rarp) but neither can actually assign anything. Even Rarp is useless unless the laptop or some other device has actually very recently communicated with the appliance so that the IP address is in the Arp cache. DHCP, BOOTP or manual configuration are the only 3 ways to get an IP configuration on to that device.

Hehe Wrong! I may not have explained what I was getting at properly, though! With the ARP command, what you end up doing is modifying the arp table. In effect you "match" a MAC address to an IP and then you can use that IP address to communicate with the device in question.

I did this once to assign an IP to a CDROM server and then was able to connect to it via telnet.
