For instance, if you pin some weather apps to a windows phone home screen for instance, in the lil app square, it will update weather with your location, presuming you have location services and data restrictions set to allow background usage.

Thus looking at phone unlocked screen you don't even have to open the weather app, at a glance you can see temp and precipitation... that , would be a live tile, it live updates when it has data and location access. Widgits are kinda similar.
