iPad vs ?

Wife said something the other day about an iPad. Was just wanting opinions on it or others. We have iPhones. 4s with iOS 8.0x. Didn't have any problems until the new iOS came out. Now we are starting to have some issues. It may be the age of our phones. As they aren't as big as the new phones. Any help or suggestions.

If you're already using iPhone, get an iPad. It's just like the iPhone except you can't make a phone call. Learning curve =0

You can actually make calls on a iPad. We have had them for a few years and they just work,... no pop ups, no add virus protection bs , I like them.

Wife had an Android Tablet for a few years with quite a few problems over that time including the last software update! I bought her an Ipad mini and so far she loves it!! She is not tech savy at all so any problem is a big one!! I have had both myself and still have an Android but my next will be an Ipad also!!

Writing this on me iPad. It's about all I use now, like old Tomtint said, no snakes, lizards, worms, and all that other nasty mess. It's like OS X, based on UNIX. I went ahead and paid the extra $130 so I could get cell service if I wanted it. And, you only pay for the month of service you want on iPad. I had it on ATT for a year, but just changed to a TMobile sim, and I get LTE service about everywhere I go, plus it's only $10 per month for the months I want it.

Yes, get an iPad. Ye'll be glad.

Kids gave me an Ipad air last Xmas and I love it to pieces. It syncs with the Iphone and I've bought an older Apple laptop that works with the Air and phone. The other day I went on subscription for Icloud for 250 gig for photo storage.

I figure in the future we'll have internet access just about anywhere and I'm better off with cloud storage than I am with a puter at home when I'm on the road. I can see an Ipad being my laptop and desktop in the near future.

Apple isn't the worlds most valuable company by accident. They make great consumer-driven products.

We have a couple and the wife and kids love to use them all the time. I do mean all the time!

The only thing I wish was in my pad is a USB port. That and arrow keys so I can go back and correct type-o's.

Kinda depends on what you want to use it for. If it's for surfing the web an $80 Walmart Android Tablet will do just fine. We bought one, I think its a 10" RCA and it surfs the web just fine. It is however WIFI only, doesn't work on the Cellular networks. But then again, you don't need a wireless plan for it either. This is the one we bought, it was $79 at the store after Black Friday, I think it was Saturday after when we bought it.

I have a Google Voice app that I could use for voice calls because I have a gmail account. I've never used it though....

Don't need a cellular plan on iPad either. Even if you get an iPad with cell built in like I did. To me it's just good insurance to have it in case ye power goes out, ye waiting on ye CFO to shop, etc. ye can still read online, and post to TBN! Like I said, cell service is month by month on iPad, never has been a contract or even mandatory that ye use it. Another thing I like about cell in mine is I don't have to depend on public wifi if I want to do something secure on me iPad. Plus a fantastic camera and built in video!

Yep, I have been buying cellular-capable iPads over the years, but only signing up for cell service on a month-to-month basis if I need it. Very nice to have when going on vacation or a ski trip and WiFi isn't available. A side benefit is that the cellular-capable iPads also include GPS hardware, which is useful in a lot of situations (don't need cellular data for GPS to work, but it speeds up satellite fixes).

I am a mobile developer and now focus on iOS exclusively. I did some tablet development for BlackBerry (PlayBook) and Android (various models) and they just never came close to the iPad in terms of user friendliness, apps, or overall capability.

I totally understand the comments about iOS 8 on your iPhone 4S. Whenever the yearly iOS updates come out, the oldest devices on the list almost always feel like they are crippled. Happens every darn time. I would not run iOS 8 on anything older than an iPhone 5.

In one sense, it's great that Apple still makes the latest OS and security updates available for a three year old device, but it's a sure bet it will strain the older devices.

My tablet never leaves the house. So the cell capability is not a show stopper for me. I have a nice 4G LTE phone when I'm away from home with an awesome camera. So like I said, it's all about what your needs are. I'm sure the IPAD's are great, but for me, the $80 WIFI android does what I need. You're needs may differ.

One thing I strongly suggest is to get the iOS device with the most memory available, even if it seems excessive at the time. I know too many people who "saved" $100 when they bought their iPhone 5 or 5S with 32G instead of 64G because they didn't see how they could use that much memory. Now they can't install iOS updates for lack of memory, unless they delete pictures or music. Which means they have to upgrade their device sooner than expected, so the savings was false. Because one thing that Apple is great at is supporting its devices for a looooong time. It's a tribute to that, that you can put iOS 8 on a 4S, and that Apple is actually planning an update to fix 4S problems with iOS 8. As long as you have enough memory to support the udpates, you can use an Apple device for a loong time. I still get great use out of my 64G iPad2.

If you buy the most memory available, even if it seems like a stretch at the time, you will postpone obsolescence by probably a year or maybe more.
