Is 2wd ok to bale with?

Are you round baling or square baling? If square are you pulling a wagon behind.

I prefer a 2wd tractor for hay. They are much more maneuverable and don't tear up the ground as much turning. I used an 884 IH and a 4020 JD and have put up thousands of square and round bales.

You are in the UK, like here I bet there aren't too many 2wd tractors around. This is for a good reason. 2wd tractors are great for hay in dry areas, but if you are in a wetter climate with mud I would go with the 4x4. My first farm tractor was 2wd, bought it cheap because nobody here wants a 2wd. Was absolutely useless in wet conditions, mud, and snow.

If you have a 4wd tractor, you have a 2wd tractor at the flip of a lever.

To answer the OP, yes you can use a 2wd, millions have been used over the past century, until 4wd came along. A 4wd will be more versatile overall.

Would be doing mostly square baling but maybe doing some round baling

I think I may go and look at the 4wd again - really just can't decide which one to get!!

image.jpg mine doesn't have a loader but I like the way the 2wd rides over my 4wds. Not really fair comparison cause the frame is longer,25 more HP and it weighs about 3,000 more. If I had one tractor with loader I would have to pick the 4wd around 80hp.
Just haying and loading hay etc. 2wd will be fine just put some weight in the rear end, fluid in tires or weights but for all around tractor doing loader work around the place I would won't the 4wd.
I wouldn't be in my hay fields if it was wet I hope but I baled at my in-laws with my Kubota and the hills were pretty steep and I had use 4wd cause the sandy soil. I don't know what it's like in UK sorry, hard for me to say really on the 2wd for you but you wouldn't have to worry and later if needed to sell it the 4wd would possible look better to others around you.

My father-in-law only has 2wd tractors, and has done hay with them on these hills of West Virginia for 40 years. The largest is a MF 165, with loader, that has no issues pulling a 4X4 round baler, and running a 9' disk mower, with or without the loader on the front.

Personally I can't see not getting 4x4, but as has been said, 2wd has got it done for many years.

Good luck finding what suits you.
