Let's see. The average walking speed is about 3mph. Assuming you are using a 4' mower and obtain 82.5% field efficiency (allowing for overlap, turning, bathroom breaks, etc.), you would be able to mow 3*4/10 = 1.2 acres per hour. So, > 4 hours to mow 5 acres. That would be miserable for me.

And that's walking without a load. My wife and I walk quite a bit. We usually do between 5 and 8 mile hikes every weekend when possible, sometimes twice a weekend. We try and take a brisk walk after dinner each night, 1.2 miles. It takes us about 21 minutes. So, about 3.5mph at a fast pace for us. Walking along steering a mower for 5 acres would be work. :laughing:

The walk behind brush mowers will give you a beating in a couple of hours. I bought a good used D-R 26" over a year ago to help clean up some 20 plus year overgrown fence row. It did a great job with that, but maintaining that acre or so of regrowth on a monthly basis is just too much. I just put a brush hog on my small tractor and will only use the D-R for the few steep or tight spaces. Thirty minutes at a time with the D-R is enough. A third of an acre per hour is a good rule of thumb I have found with the D-R in our bumpy terrain, mostly in 2nd or third gear (1.5 to 2.5 MPH). The walk behind is really good for trimming around trees and mowing the steep parts of the back of the pond bank and near the edge of the creek banks where it's too dangerous for the tractor. In some really tough places it is only used a couple of times a season to keep regrowth manageable. A tractor is immeasurably better in relatively open areas. Hope this helps.
