I have an chance at bidding on a MF 255 1978 model with almost 1700 hours. Are there any known issues (problems) with this model or with MF in general. I am a noob and not brand loyal to any make, I would like just a dependable older tractor to bushhog, move dirt and do a little augering and maybe some finish mowing. Any advice would be useful. If you would like to see a picture of the tractor go to the post of "how much would you bid on this tractor?" Its a small pic but all the auction house had.

Can't make out any details in the pic. The most desirable 255 would have a 236 ci engine (oil filter on the left side of engine) with 8 speed transmission and wet brakes (notched plates between the differential and trumpet housings).

The MF255 very good tractors and as Todd said the ones with the AD4-236 are the best but both engines are good. That tractor being a 1978 should have the AD4-236 engine in it. and if the hours are right it should still have a lot of work left in it. Around here a good MF255 will sell for $9500.00 to $10000.00. I was an mechanic for MF dealers for 27 years if I can answer anymore question Email me at daustin62@aol.com Big Dean

Well, it was a good tractor. It went for 6200 plus a 10% buyers premium. Total was 6930. which was more than I could afford. I got on a website that gave prices for used equipment and it said between 4700-5800 dollars. I went and spoke to the auctioneers the day before the sale and they said between 3500-5000. To say the least I was disappointed when some people began bidding in the 5000 dollar range and upwards. I just left the auction disgusted. Oh well I guess I can just forget finding the bargin tractor!!! Unless its something made in 1918!!!!!!

By the way thanks for all the help and input, I really appreciate it. I apologize if the above note sounded sarcastic,I have a sour taste in my mouth over trying to find a deal at an auction and getting disappointed. I can't afford to buy new, and I am (was) really hoping to find some kind of deal on an older tractor--I guess I can forget that. Save my pennies and in about 15 years buy a new tractor.

Stay in there. Keep going to the auctions. One will show up like you want and in your price range. It just takes some patience.
