Is adjusting valves neccessary?

I talked to the service dept at my JD dealership to get a price and appointment (takes an hour to get there) to adjust the valves on my 4300. I explained that it has 4000 hrs and they have never been touched. The dealer talked me out of bringing it in.... Unless there was some indication of a problem (hard starting, noisy tappets) they are probably OK,

If you have solid lifters they need to be adjusted.

Read the manual and determine the proper clearance. Then go to a good auto parts store and get a set of "go-no go" feeler gauges, which includes one for that clearance. If the kid behind the counter seems puzzled by this request, get an old guy who works there. He will know what you are asking for.
