Is bigger really better 16' vs 18'? Also, Heartland trailers OK? Thank you!

I have no issues with pallets and my trailer with sides. I used to carry a 12' 4x4 and simply set it on the back then push it forward with the forklift and 4x4.

The best thing I did though is buy a 4500# winch on sale for $99 @ Rural King. Now just winch it up and pull it back with the tractor and a chain when I get home.

I only haul pallets a few times a year so it's no big deal.

i have a 10K 20' flat equipment trailer. not quite the same thing but.... I have stake pocket sides built out of 2x10's. there have been plenty of times when i have loved my sides, and plenty of times when ive been happy i dont have them, either to side load, or hang over the side by 2" or opening car doors more than 4".

every time i use it im happy i have a 20' flat. there have been a few times ive wished for another 2'. (always another 2') I also have a small 5x10 single axle that still gets used for small jobs as its much quicker to move and hook up etc.

but as for trailers to be used to haul tractor stuff... longer is always better IMHO.

I have a 16 footer with rail sides and its all I need. I never had a issue with sides being in the way, but then I dont haul stuff like others. If I needed something off trailer I cant lift, I just drive on and lift off. simple. As for hauling something too long, my gate comes off with a simple pull of bar hinge and just leave gate in trailer. I carried wooden I joists that were 25 ft long just fine. 4 ft in back and 1 foot in front. Your mileage may vary so thats why there are many choices of trailers out there .
