I know we are just talking hypothetical, But I can not think of single reason to have even considered fighting Russia in 1945. Plenty of reasons not to though.

Considering the USSR's behavior for much of the past sixty years as well as ours, that having prevented the cold war, the arms race and the arming of much of the world would have been arguably reason enough. We would most certainly be living in a much different world had we invaded Russia and been successful. A lot of "what ifs".

Not sure when we had addtional A bombs. The only two in the US arsenal were used in Japan later in 1945. I believe it was many months before any further weapons were available. The next test was in July 1946 which suggests that it may have been a full year after VE day before bombs #4 and #5 were ready for use. One year of conventional combat with the Soviet Army starting at full readiness and toe to toe? Not a pretty thought.

No German troops? Than who was in the POW camps in England, Canada and the US? And I fore got another secret weapon, the Proximity Fuse used to down Japanese plains, more secret than the A bomb. The fuse was later adapted to arterially shells to air burst and rain down phosphorus on troops. It got so bad that the German troops would not come out and play. B 29 s could also take off from Japan too. But that is water under the bridge now.

One other small detail that may of demoralized U.S. Gi's during an invasion of Russia, is the Soviets use of women in front line infantry.

She was the famous sniper, but women played a pivotal role filling the ranks of their infantry, some of the first units to enter the battle of Berlin where made up of women. I read that women were the first Soviets to enter Hitlers bunker, where they sacked Eva braun's wardrobe.

I don't know how GI Joe would of felt about killing women, really goes against our way of thinking.
