I wouldnt buy a used chainsaw (or any small powertool) sight unseen. Unless i can run it and check it out id pass.

An "XP" saw would be a Swede saw for sure, I would assume the lesser tuned versions of the XP saws would also be made there. 372XP and the 365 for example. 357XP, and 354 I think? Arboristsite probably has a list somewhere kicking around.
There are deals on ebay but I hear many horror stories as well. I'd rather just buy a new saw or local used saws I could pick up and run.

Agreed with the above.
For a novice saw buyer, do NOT buy sight unseen. The saw may look great in the pics, but unless the ebayer includes photos of the piston with the muffler off, or at least a pic w/compression testor attached, I'd be leary. There is a hugh difference between how a saw looks, and how a saw runs.

Id say its safe to say all the XP's are Swedish, my 359 is Swedish also even my 345 was and it is HO grade.
There are some dealers on AS that sell used saws and they can be trusted sight unseen probably no experience there just guessing.
The fleabay and CL and so on would be a big gamble and I would say get a new pro saw locally or online is going to be your best purchase and most bang for the buck.
I bought my 346 online new and several others and not had a seconds trouble with any of them new is the key on that. fwtw
And dont ask a dealer what they think of the competition and be surprised at what they say. my .02

This is the same for most lawn and garden equipment out there. Saws, mowers, tillers, splitters. Any thing you see with a Cub, Huski, John Deere, Toro, Bolens, MTD, Murray, Sthil, Poulan, Craftsman, etc... There's like two or three conglomerates that make this stuff. Each brands fans will try to make arguments that theirs is special. Every one is just like the others with a little special plastic, and a different name.

Umm.. no. They arent the same.
Yes there are few parent companies, but to make the argument that say a Poulain Wild Thing is the same as a Husquavarna 346 because they are part of the same company is foolish.
Certain sub brands are made to specific price points, that means they have to make cuts in areas that matter.

I certainly didnt take what he said to mean THAT^^^^I think what he is geting that there isnt much difference between a poulan wildthing and perhaps a husky 340??
But certainly NOT the pro-grade "made in sweeden" 346xp

I wouldnt even compare a 340 to a wildthing. The 340 is a decent low end saw, the Wildthing is a POS.

The opinion that theyre all the same, so your a sucker if you pay more" is a sentiment thats shared by many, if it wasnt Harbor Freight wouldnt exist:laughing: . Its not the case as most know. You usually get what you pay for.
