Is it a pain to raise trailer GVW?

Magnets are fine for interstate commerce. IDK why they wouldn't be for NY. Just because you were fined for it doesn't really mean it was law either.

There are trailer fabricators whom build trailers from scratch, and are registered, licensed by the state/DOT whom produce weight certified trailers . I would reccommend you contact one of them to evaluate your trailer and determine if the trailer can be modified to the higher load limit. Then with the fabrication/ mods done, a new title from the fabricator can be issued. The mods may be few and cheap, or might be too extensive and costly to make it worthwhile. A good fabricator can add length, increase frame strength and load limit, change out axles and issue a new manufacturers title and spec sheet for your trailer to be registered as new with the new specs. Racemaster trailers in Oswego may be able to help you, or a shop in your area that is a licensed trailer fabricator.

After I figured tounge weight, I'm fine. I had the trailer custom built. It is MORE than capable of handling a couple more tons, BUT, I wanted it titled and registered at 10,000 so NY doesn't get my $$$.
