Is IT a ZerT Or a ZerK?

I called them Zerts all my life and didn't know the right word till recently on one of these farm sites. Course I picked it up as machine shop jargon as a kid so makes sense that I got the wrong input.

When I was a little kid our relatives from Oklahoma visited. My Aunt said Richard will you go out to the car and get my bag out of the turtle? I had no idea what she was talking about........

I'm sure Wagtail can leave us all in the dust with his slang.

If he'd come visit I'd take him a ride in my old Jeep. We'd even peel out on the highway.

Growing up I heard the word turtle used also but it consisted of two words.....turtle back. Guess it refers back to the days of the early A Ford roadsters.

Lots of people do. I think the first time they heard someone say zerk they thought they said zert. They never saw in written anywhere so they just went with what they thought they heard.

Been Zerk all my life also. Maybe it's just what part of the country you're from.

We always seemed to know that the correct name for a grease nipple was a zerk fitting. We just didn't fret over it.

Nipples are still better than zerks. Who doesn't like nipples?

I call them zerks, both written/typed, and spoken.

Nipples are pipe fittings. And nipples is more letters, and more syllables, thus taking longer to type or say.....and I am lazy.
