Is it my phone, or the router?

Try turning off the wifi connection from your phone, kill the connection it currently has to your router, turn the wifi back on on the phone, let it search again for available connections and then connect,
sometimes it just requires re-establishing a fresh connection, at least works here around our house, We have laptops, tablets, cell phones, and every now-n-then we have to do this with each device,

Has it ever worked? If so, find out what changed. If not, it may be a compatibility issue between your wireless router, your phone and/or your environment. You may be able to modify the phone and or wireless router to use a protocol other then the one that doesn't work well for you.

Thanks to all for the advice...yes, it has worked reasonably well for computers...Barry 1 suggested I do a speed test, something I have performed frequently, and the DSL service I am saddled with gives a laughably slow maximum of 1.51 mbps download and .38 mbps upload for internet service. The link speeds I stated between my router and the computers/phones is entirely different from what I get from my DSL. deepNdirt suggests turning off the wi fi connection on the phone and then turning it back on, I have been doing that several times a day for months now and the connection still drops frequently. My GF has an IPhone BUT her connection rarely drops. Her phone connects at the 54 mbps rate because it is an older model. Nothing has really changed that would make any difference unless it is something my DSL provider has done.

Better than the old 56k modems. By about a factor of 30:confused2:

I have TWC 15Mbps. And usually score 13-14 on that speedtest linked above.

I used to have turbo, which was 20, when they had the promo on it.but now just have the standard and pay $5 extra for the wifi modem. Turbo is $10 more but comes with free wifi. So I basically save $5 per month going from 20 down to 15. Which I was fine with and dont really see any difference as I just browse alot and dont really do much downloading.

Has it every worked well with this phone that now does not work? The other computers could largely be irrelevant, because they could be using different protocols than what your phone and wireless router agree on. Since you're saying their conn speed is different, they are using different protocols.

Are there firmware updates for the router and, if so, can you update it?

The suggestion of checking what WiFi channel your router is using is a good one.

Your link speed on the phone (wireless connection) has nothing to do with your DSL connection the 72 mips is how fast your wireless device is talking to your network. my wireless talks to my access point router at 1000mips as do my wired devices. Chances are you have a setting in the phone configured wrong simple test next time you go out look for a public network like MacDonald or a friend house connect to their network and see how long you connection lasts. If your phone is in a case try taking it out see if that helps. some wireless routes have different settings based on speed 54 mips or 72 mips as i recall this is due to the frg 2.5 or 5 ghzts . does the iPhone you mentioned show 2 different connections 54 mips @2.5 gig and 72 mips @ 5gig try looking in the router settings for this.

Also This is often something on the cell phone itself, if you have a power saving application or networking app, or an app that you downloaded around the same time you noticed this issue then uninstall it, power cycle the phone, and see if that helps, if it didn稚 then proceed to the next ste

I had similar problems until I discovered through similar online complaints that my DSL router's power supply was going bad. The router would hiccup, the computers were ok with it but not the other wireless devices. I bought a new one with higher current ratings on eBay but now I scrounge better ones at garage and estate sales. I also picked up a Netgear WNR1000 router at an estate sale and cabled it to the 'G' rated Access point and discovered that I can now run the wireless network at 'N' Speeds. And its flawless.

BTW: the Netgear instructions (available online) suggest renaming the SSID (broadcast) name from "NETGEAR" to something else of your choosing. Its now "Michigan State Police Alpha 101" .

Assuming the phone used to hold a connection but no longer does, try this. Go to settings>wifi>menu>advanced> and make sure auto connect and auto network switch are unchecked. Depending on what model phone you are using and which version of Android these steps might be slightly different but not so much you couldn't figure it out. Auto connect and auto switch caused all kinds of trouble for my wife's GS3, including heavy battery drain and the lost connection problem you are having.

Also, try logging into your router on one of the computers (usually located at 192.168.1.1 or similar) and check connection status there. You should be able to tell if like zzvyb6 says the router is hiccuping by looking at the uptime counter.

Hope this helps,

John
