I just ran down to Advance Auto and got a Sunpro gauge. The package says "metric fittings available", but it has three fittings with it, and it looks like one *might* fit -- can't tell just yet since I just moved the tractor and the block's hot right now. Nice looking gauge for only about $26.

If the fitting works, this should tell the tale -- not to mention being a slick "custom" addition to the dashboard :).

My wife thinks I should just stop fooling around and get the water pump. We'll see.

I have a YM 1700 and thought it was running hot . I did a lot to it, had the radiator cleaned . Put a new head gasket on it , Put a new radiator cap on .Light was still coming on got a sending unit from Hoye and that fix it. .It was 92 the other day and I ran the 5 rotary cutter for 6 hour and the light did not come on.

I've gone through this same exact scenario. Get a new sending unit from Hoye and a set of guages. My 1700, on occassion, would kick the warning light on. I would stop, let her cool down, and then proceed. I did multiple flushes on the radiator and block running pure water in the summer to help out the thermo-syphion system. After I installed a set of guages I realized that these things, with a 14 psi radiator cap, run warm. I did put a water pump on for piece of mind but she still runs in the 200 to 220 range. No problem. Light goes on at 235. I think the boiling point is around 248 with a 14 psi radiator cap. So, if I were in your shoes, do the following.
1. New sending unit
2. Get a set of guages
3. Install a water pump if you want to
I like my pump. I never need to worry about her overheating anymore. Aaron at Hoye is great BTW. Cost is a tad over $300. Not a difficult install. Good luck!!!

If your radiator level is low and the overflow tank is full, does this mean your radiator cap is suspect?

I have been thru the same drill as you with my 1700 only to discover in the end that the temp sensor was bad. I have installed the gauge, had the radiator cleaned and rodded at a radiator shop too. I like having the peace of mind of the temp gauge too. I don't think the water pump is necessary. I can bushog all day long and the temp never gets above 190 unless the radiator screen gets clogged up. Which can happend quickly in tall grass. I run it hard 2400 rpms. The tractor seems to like it that way too.

If you are running the bush hog at 2400, you are putting a lot more pressure on the hog, than you are suppose to. It should be running more like 2200, so its at the right PTO speed for the hog. There is a red mark on the rpm gauge that tells you when you are running it at the right speed.

I run it a little shy of the red line. I thought the red line was 2400

If its a refurb it may have a meter showing the red 'pto' tic at 2400, but for a 1700 I think the tic should be at 2200 like prunty said. I've seen refurbs wih the wrong meter like this.

Have you checked your radiator fins for small debris?

My YM240 would run hot (230+ degrees) after 30 minutes of light cutting. Someone on the message board suggested I lightly blow compressed air through my radiator fins. When I did, dirt and grass came out of the radiator fins. Now my tractor never runs hot. I bushogged a tall 3 acre field the other day with a 5 ft cutter in 96 degree heat and never got above 210 degrees. Come to find out, the radiator screen to my tractor was missing. I made one out of an old window screen.

Just a thought.
