According to Raw Regulator Power Train on Historical Raw Milk Dairy, Lawton's Family Farm, founded in 1732, is being hounded out of the business of raw milk sales by the Foxborough MA Health Department.

I grew up on a dairy farm and drank raw milk for the first 18 years of my life. I'm content with the milk I buy at my local grocery store, but I have no problem if others want to buy raw milk.

Your thoughts?

Pretty common, raw milk sales are pretty well discouraged everywhere. Folks that do it around here do a deal that involves buying "shares". A legal end run.

Well, its not the state health department that's putting the pressure on them. Its not even the county health department. Its the town health department that wants to enact stricter rules than the state laws. I strongly disagree with local laws that trump state laws in most cases. Like New York City's attempt to ban large soft drinks and Chicago's ban on goose liver. Some local Mayor McCheese is just trying to make a name for themselves.... OR, someone wants the smell of dairy cows gone from the neighborhood.

However, you have to also take a look at the author of the story. This isn't unbiased reporting. He's selling books and has an agenda. This is good fuel for his vehicles. About | The Complete Patient

I think only 17 states have laws against it and most of those states allow "herdshares" as you mention. That gets the state off the legal hook if someone gets sick.

How is the state "on the hook" if someone gets sick?

Another moron with issues wanting to tote their power!

And as previously asked how was the state ever "on the hook"

When has raw milk ever been proven any more dangerous than pasturized?

If you drink milk from an "unsanitary dairy" it makes it OK as long as you pasturize it?

It isn't possible to know what is motivating the town of Foxboro given the info presented. MA local politics can be bruising and corrupt.

People do get sick from raw milk. All else being equal, pasteurized milk is safer than raw milk because it eliminates more chances of accidental contamination [edit: affecting milk drinkers]. Pasteurized milk from unsanitary dairies, or other food-borne disease sources like hamburger full of E. coli, really have nothing to do with that basic question.

I miss getting the milk straight from the cow. Never hurt me as a kid, but milking was a chore back them. I have been thinking about getting a milk cow, I have the room, and the fencing would be easy. Have enough pasture to do it, but now the age factor to do twice a day milking is keeping me back.

Why can't Foxboro stay
the way it's always been
since I moved in?

Glad to see that Lawton's Family Farm is back in black.
Around here, a small town will start to get "the buzz" - all the real estate agents tell you that you simply must buy a place there because the schools are the best and the taxes are so low. Then all the new folks want town water, sewers and sidewalks, an indoor pool at the high school instead of the YMCA, and an indoor track, and a hippodrome, etc, etc. Then they can't believe how much the taxes are going up! It's kind of funny ... if you don't happen to live there yourself.
