Is Lifting Rear of CUTS of the Ground Bad?

Pardon the poor drawing. How is there more stress on the front axle?

Incomplete drawing. you failed to put the second fulcrum on the drawing. The rear axle. Unloads the front axle (fulcrum) when you place weight (3 pt weight) behind the second fulcrum.

Having started pulling pine trees using my FEL it dawned on me yesterday I routinely pick the rear of my tractor off the ground when pulling and lifting stuff. I do use ballast and understand about the possible safety issues but my concern is wear & tear on the tractor. I believe tools should be fully used but not abused. I'm guessing most of the stress is being felt by front axle and I am wondering if I need to be more careful about doing this. TIA
Dont know for your tractor, but I frequently get one or both rear wheels off the ground doing loader work with my 7520. This is with all 4 AGs loaded and usually a counterweight. I have not had a problem from this in its 975 hours of use. I dont worry about it at all except excercising care to be safe. Not all tractors are built to provide reliably for firm use. Im glad mine is OK with that.

You drive the tractor forward in 4wd, with the rear still off the ground. This creates a tremendous amount of leverage and can often pop whatever out of the ground. Also a good way to break a front axle or blow a hyd cylinder.

The rear axle. Unloads the front axle (fulcrum) when you place weight (3 pt weight) behind the second fulcrum.

These are both very good points and I appreciate the discussion, it has been many many years since I took physics. Looks like I need to stop pulling with the FEL and recalculate the required my ballast, I am sure I'm at least a couple hundred shy.

by all means keep pulling off the bucket. If you live make sure you post the pics of the damage and the multi thousand $$ repair bill from the shop. pull from the draw bar thats the only part of a tractor ment to be pulled from!

You are looking at it purely a from weight standpoint. The point that you are missing is that once the rears are up in the air, all the torque from the engine is going to the fronts. Since some front axles/gears have been broken as attested to by others, I suspect the front axles are not really designed to handle the entire torque from the engine, but rather designed to share the torque as when properly ballasted. Jmho, so take it with some salt.

kebo is right on. however besides the torque issue once the rear wheels are off the ground all the weight is on the front axle ,thats alot to ask of a front end.

Yes. Don't do it.

In college I took physics and trigonometry as well as logic and metaphysics, but don't remember much of it. And I've never been to a casino. But I do know that 5 times outa 6 you could be right about six shooter roulette. If it was made to run on all four, I'd stick with that.:D
