Thank you all for the replys. Looks like I will continue to use the black stuff with moly on my little tractor. The clear stuff would have been nice though.

Is Moly recommended by the manufacturer of your tractor? If not I would listen to those who suggest using EP grease without Moly for its superior lubrication qualities. I use Moly for bucket pins only.

There is no reason to NOT use Moly grease other than it is usually slightly more expensive. Moly does not reduce lubrication qualities, it improves them.

But why?? If there is any grease that's black anywhere on a piece of equipment I'm even remotely close to, I soon have it all over me. Heck, I even manage to get it in my ears and almost always in my hair. :D

The tractor is a Kubota BX24 and, oddly, after a quick review of the operator's manual I find at least 4 refrences to grease and 2 say multipurpose (no mention of moly) and 2 say moly grease. Two conflicting pages even show the same drawing of the FEL's grease fittings.

I think to keep it simple for me I will stick with the moly type. I was just dreaming about the clear stuff.

I should probably go out now and wipe up the grease I put on yesterday. I have found if I really want to get carried away, those little acid brushes and a rag get more of the excess off.

DieselPower, one more thing, any idea what kind of carrier is in the clear stuff? It's clear about like vasoline.

And one more one more if I can. I also dislike the oil running out of the gun when it is stored; any recommendations on a brand or carrier type that doesn't seperate as much?

Not sure what clear stuff your talking about. Know what brand it is? There could be many types of grease made depending on the base used.

The oil leaking out of your gun is the oil separating/bleeding from the grease base. Look for a grease with a very low oil separation rating and the problem should go away. My suggestions would be something like Moly 880 Crown and Chassis Grease in NGLI #2 made by Texas Refinery Corp. It's a 5% Moly by volume grease and you will never have to worry about oil separation. It's a Calcium 12-Hydroxysterate base grease and is highly compatible with other grease base types.

I think the "clear grease" the o/p is talking about is just general purpose grease. I used to use the Mystic (JT6 I think it is) general purpose grease which is fairly clear. When I made a mess with it the smears were clear. I went away from using it as it separates quite easily. I now use the Mystic Molly grease which I find works better.

I was using the general purpose grease like Kubota recommended on the mower deck and on the hydro pedal, but I have found the molly grease stays longer where it is put and the deck bearings are quieter. There is also no separation of the grease in the deck bearings with the molly like there was with the general purpose grease.
