Is this a scam? Is the dealer pulling my leg? Extra transmission gear needed for open station L6060?

Grand L60 ROPS do not come with the internal gear kit installed from Japan nor can they be ordered that way. I just priced out a L3560 ROPS and the dealer figured in extra to split the tractor. Asked him if he could order another unit that had it installed and his reply was they don't build them that way from Japan, internal gear kit is only factory installed on cab models. His thought on that was Kubota took into consideration the extra time required to split a cab model would raise the price to much when a mid-pto was needed.

Are you 100% certain this is factual information? Could it be they told you so in persuade you to buy the one in stock?

Just priced out a L3560 and L6060 ROPS using "Build My Kubota" option on Kubota.com. Both times the internal gear was added automatically to the price along with the mid PTO. It shows as two separate line items and the tractor overall cost only goes up based on their prices (no adder for dealer installation). No special note or price adder indicating tractor splitting would be necessary to install at selling dealer.

It would be interesting to learn what others encounter who ordered their GL60's with mid PTO. Did they get charged an extra $1,000+ to split their tractor?

The lack of internal gear on the lesser HP GL60's might come as a shocker for those who purchase used in the future. This is a change in configuration philosophy. Earlier lesser HP ROPS Grand 10, 30 and 40 series tractors came with the internal gear. Only the higher HP ROPS didn't come with the gear.

Absolutely certain.

Yes, the Kubota site does indeed add the internal shaft to a ROPS model if a mid PTO is ordered at the same time or if a MMM or front snow blower is ordered at the same time.

That said, a ROPS model ordered without mid PTO is shipped without the internal shaft and gear needed to bolt a mid PTO on subsequently.

Keep in mind that dealers do not always "order" their "new" tractors from Kubota but rather transfer an existing unit from another dealer in order to pocket the aged inventory discount that has been applied to one that has been sitting on a dealer's lot for awhile.

In this case, the OP should simply refuse to pay for the installation but should tell the dealer that he should order a new unit from Kubota with factory installed mid PTO (and shaft).

Caveat emptor.

You didn't order the wrong tractor, the dealer did not make a mistake ordering the tractor, his mistake was lack of knowledge when quoting the price. Grand L60 ROPS do not come with the internal gear kit installed from Japan nor can they be ordered that way. I just priced out a L3560 ROPS and the dealer figured in extra to split the tractor. His thought on that was Kubota took into consideration the extra time required to split a cab model would raise the price to much when a mid-pto was needed. Look at it this way, the price of a cab just got $1500 closer to a ROPS if you have to have a mid-pto.

The price put it outside of what I wanted to pay so I'm looking for a low hour used Grand L40 ROPS L3540 or L3940. The L3240, L3540 and L3940 ROPS came from the factory with the internal gear kit installed which I can install in about 1/2 an hour. I'm guessing leaving it out of the 60 was a cost cutting move.

Not true.

ROPS model L6060s can be ordered from Kubota with both mid PTO and/or the internal gear and shaft factory installed.

It is only when one has been built without the shaft and gear that the Mid PTO cannot be installed for about $600 without a split.

SDT,

The way you explained is how I understood the process to work.

Ordered tractor with Mid PTO: Internal Gear and mid PTO mounted from factory. (Dealer has no work to perform with respect to mid PTO) Daveinwestmi claims a tractor cannot be ordered this way and the dealer must split and install the internal gear increasing the purchase price due to the long labor hours involved in splitting the tractor and drivetrain.

Tractor on lot and purchaser wants Mid PTO: Two scenarios:
1) Tractor will need to be split to add the internal gear. Purchaser likely to incur the cost of splitting tractor plus parts.
2) Dealer was proactive in ordering tractor with the internal gear (less mid PTO) from the beginning. Mid PTO could be added easily and purchaser doesn't have to pay labor for splitting the tractor, but does incur cost of mid PTO.

Considering the internal gear is $249, it seems reasonable to option the tractor with it in the event mid PTO is desired in the future or to open the potential buyer pull when selling.

For a knowledgeable buyer, I agree. For a dealer, I think that they can't afford to just option every tractor with it "just in case". Sounds like not many L buyers want the mid PTO, so most of the time you increased your costs by $249 just in case someone wants to buy a tractor on the lot with it.

That was my first thought dealer transferred older unit to earn more money and screwed up and now wants you to pay for their mistake. Honestly if Kubota just built them with the mid pro gear installed on all models it would add less than $100 on 30k+ tractors and simplify inventory and ordering options.

Reading this I can't get past the notion that you're planning to use the snowblower on an open station tractor! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Maybe put the extra parts money towards a cab tractor and enjoy snowblowing in a t-shirt.

Wow. If this happened to me, I would be looking at getting a different tractor. Somebody screwed up and wants you to pay for a chunk of the screw up, plus they will have to break open a brand new unbroken tractor and that gives me the chills. I would walk away and start over. How much does this additional expense get you towards a cab model?

I would probably tell the dealer that I want a week to "think about it". The dealer should be informed that the deal hinges on them being VERY informative with all the numbers relating to ALL your options. If I still felt uncomfortable with the deal, then more "thinking" time is warranted.:scratchchin::scratchchin:

I have a ROPS L6060, used mostly for mowing. Much of the mowing is done around and beneath trees.

I also have 4 other Kubota tractors, all used for mowing, though some are also used for snow removal.

All tractors are used for mowing near and beneath trees so cannot use cab tractors.

No snow blowers at this time but about a year ago I ran across a deal on a new, unused, though previously owned, front mounted snow blower to fit my L6060. Didn't need it but considered buying it because the price was right (about half of usual selling price) and it was only four miles away.

Upon investigation, I learned that my L6060 did not have the internal shaft and gear needed to install a mid PTO without a split, even though the dealer had told me before I purchased it that I "could always add a mid PTO later for about $650."

No big deal in my case, because I do not need or even want a snow blower but yet more evidence to do one's own homework (yes, this is a subtlety likely to be missed by most dealers, let alone buyers) and not trust any dealer's salesperson.
