Patrick, I have yet to find a better made pair of ViseGrips then ViseGrip brand. They are my favorite. I have tried the Euro types, the copycay Sears type which I just give away or hope somebody steals (but no one will).
My vise is a Wilton. It has been hammered on to push apart a frozen drive line u joint which it finally popped loose. It was my friends, he tried it on his shiny new chinese, all rotating, pipe accetping full swivel beauty and pulled every thread the thing had. It still looks like something, except it does not actually do anything anymore except hold down loose flying papers. When it comes to tools, I want quality, not necessarily the best as my abilities don't always warrant it. I have been given countless screwdrivers, sockets and pliers from various asian origins and they are either given away or yes, tossed into 90 gallon filing receptacle.
The fairly new Crescent wrench with the extra big jaw is especially handy.
Other favorites (but not necessarily exclusive):
Channelock channelocks.
Klein or Ideal linemens
Proto screwdrivers
Stilletto titanium hammers
Bosch or Porter cable routers
Porter Cable belt sanders
Hilti roto hammers
Skil/Dewalt worm drives
Makita cordless
Makita compound slide saw
The list goes on and on...
