Backhoe Is the L39 stronger than the L4600?

I'd love to get a chisel like that on my machine! I'm pretty much settled (so far anyway) on a TLB type of unit and the L39 is about the top of my budget. As much as I'd like the L45...it's just not in the budget at this time.

An L48 would be nice but I'll be financing around half of the price so used machines are out.

What other machines do you guys think would be comparable to the L39?

I have noticed that myself. I'd always assumed that just as an Ag machine can do construction chores, if not as well suited for them; a TLB/construction tractor is just not suited for agricultural chores.

I read that claim often, but I just don't understand it.

I brush hog with my L45.

The machine has a 3 point hitch and pto.

The ONLY argument I could see is that the TLBs come with R4 tires standard with no official option for R1.

Currently in production? I'm not aware of any honestly. JD canned the 110.

Having owned both the 39 and the 45, I suggest you do one of the following:

If you want the L39, buy used. Since the advent of the L45, L39 used values have tanked. If you search you will find a nice unit, with well less than 1k hours for about 1/2 the new MSRP.

or

Start scrounging around and beg, borrow, steal the extra to get the L45.

I thoroughly enjoyed owning the L39. The machine was great and worked really well on my property. The GST had a gear for everything. It was generally "quicker" traveling around the property. I enjoyed brush hogging with it as it would just "go". The L45 fell in my lap so I had a chance to "own" them side by side. The HST is just too easy. It is MUCH easier to do fine loader work (specifically with pallet forks). It is easier to use in slippery conditions as the HST applies the power with less jerking, the GST had a tendency to induce wheel spin. Sometimes the HST is slower around the property. I could ascend the hill on my driveway at a faster ground speed with the GST loaded or unloaded than with the HST. It is moderately annoying that the L45 doesn't have cruise control.

No matter what, if you get a TLB you will be amazed at the capability of these relatively small machines.

The only negatives to using my Case backhoe for ag work is it is a little heavier and ruts the soil a little more in wet weather. Also, the 3 pt is hydraulic up and down, it does not float up. This is nice for a box blade, but not so nice with a brush hog which needs to ride up. I could modify the hydraulics but I have not. The loader is super fast with the pump capacity so it has become the round bale feeder.

Possibly the Yanmar CBL 40 would be comparable.

I'll have to take a look at the Yanmar 40 and the JD 110...unless anyone can pipe in and tell me why to stay away.

I really appreciate everyone's opinion on this because it's my first purchase and my experience is limited to golf course construction equipment which was mostly all much bigger than what I'm after. I've also operated a 90's Ford 40HP with a Brado hoe attachment so I really don't have a lot to compare to with the exception of that old Ford.

Those of you that have operated the L39, L45, L48 types...thanks a bunch for the input!

I know I'm on a Kubota category but I've got someone telling me a JD with hoe attachment may be what I want. Of course they are claiming that his is holding up better than his friends Kubota. However, he couldn't tell me what series bota he was comparing it to. Theories on that?

Anyone know if one of those with a chisel tip would work cutting roots?

Perhaps if you had a spade attachment on the end rather than the chisel point but it would be a lot of work to put it on and off and you couldn't dig with it at least not very well AND the cost would be as much as a tractor.

AND likely not comparing the Kubota TLB series with them either. I really don't think a tractor with a backhoe of any color is any better than another, they all have the same shortcoming of lower hydraulic flow and lighter weight compared to a true TLB. I haven't checked to see if Yanmar still make the CBL40 but that would be the only thing that may be comparable but I think they are priced comparable to a L45 or more. If you were to look at used, the JD 110 would be a good choice but barring that, you would be left with only the Kubota.

Ducati - not sure if you are in CA or CT - sounds like CT with granite.. Here's a nice L39 on LI - great price - but if you are in CA it's the wrong coast!
