Is there a "standard" Cetane rating?

Re: Is there a \"standard\" Cetane rating?

An article I read the other day mentioned a $.04-.05 per gallon increase(if I remember correctly)... I think we can deal with that after last years prices.

At the present time I am only buying diesel as I need it and usually keep about 6 gallons on hand just in case I get in the mood to do some serious dirt moving or tilling one night.

Right now the price is around $2.40 a gallon at the pump.

However, I have a friend who farms for a living and he buys 1200 gallons at a time. OUCH!

Thanks guys--do your dealers change the little display numbers at the pumps when they bring in a different supply? The ones around here never seem to change--so how do you go about finding what is really in their tanks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The stations I buy fuel at do not, but then, they dont change the octane ratings on the gasoline pumps either. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif You have to trust the label on the pump.

Re: Is there a \"standard\" Cetane rating?

I believe that retail stations are now required by law (not sure if federal or state) to post octane and maybe cetane ratings on the pumps. My diesel pump in New Hampshire back in the mid-90's had no cetane sticker but everyone now does.

Fuel suppliers are not really considered retail stations so their dispensing unit may or may not have any stickers (mine doesn't). It is always good to ask first. The honest ones will give you a straight answer.

We're still flying blind here.. Are you guys considered a "green state"? California and a few others are Green and have a little different rules than the rest of us. Maybe this is why you see ratings??

Re: Is there a \"standard\" Cetane rating?

The only thing "green" about New Hampshire is that we don't take any of your "green" in the form of sales or income tax. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We do have other "hidden" taxes but they are still way less than surrounding states.

All of the northeast states give octane ratings on the pumps. I am not sure about cetane ratings.

Re: Is there a \"standard\" Cetane rating?

Well--this doesn't answer the question but...I stopped at a thruway rest area for gas today, and while there I went in and asked about their diesel fuel and the sign on the pump (said 40). They had no idea what was in the tanks, and even went and looked up the delivery log--no info there either. I guess we are still "flyin blind" in NY! Just have to hope that you get a good batch, and add enough PS to keep the "little" diesels happy /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
