Is there a standard PTO shaft size?

Bob,

An idea just flashed into my head. How about shutting down the tractor with the PTO engaged? This might keep the PTO brake from working. I don't know if you've tried this yet, or if it will work/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Worth a shot.

<font color=blue>What I am proposing is that you might try to turn the rear PTO with the engagement lever in the middle of its travel and see if that works better.</font color=blue>

Now there's an idea! I hadn't thought of that, which is one of the things which makes this forum so useful!

I'll go out and try this later.. maybe there is a position which lets the shaft rotate freely. That would be the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the idea!

This might solve the problem (if, in fact, it is one) of premature wear on the PTO system, but it won't help me get the PTO shaft on when I change implements. I always try to idle way down before shutting down the PTO, but I really don't want to have to back into the garage and let it idle (to cool down) for 5 minutes with the tiller or mower running.. ya know? It's a good idea, though.. but my main problem is getting that ^%$#@ PTO shaft on. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

BTW, I just went out to see if there was a "middle" position on my PTO lever, and I can't find one. No matter where the lever is, the tractor PTO only rotates, grudgingly, a tiny bit. Well, I have an over-running clutch that should show up in a day or two, and I'll see if I like that. I hope I don't have to shorten the PTO shafts on my implements, because there will be no going back except to replace the shaft. I can't imagine that the OVC would be worse, though. At least I'll be able to connect implements without <shudder> having to ask my wife to help. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I think if you have ordered the ORC, it will make a heck of a difference. I just wonder why you have to have one to turn the shaft on a tractor with one built inside??
I have one on my Yanmar, but I NEEDED one. I kept running into things......../w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I found the same thing. The PTO brake drags enough that I can't turn the rear PTO on my tractor at all, with the engagement lever in any position./w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif The brake on yours may be set even tighter than mine if it abruptly stops your PTO driven implements as soon as your disengage the lever. As I posted earlier, I can let my mid mower gradually slow down by just pulling the lever back an inch or two from the engaged position. On my PTO lever I can feel the point where the clutch begins to engage just before the lever is all the way forward. I can't see any real harm to adding the over-running clutch except that you will lose the safety feature of the PTO brake. I don't believe that there is an over-running cluch built into the tractor since there is normally no need for one on an independent PTO. Good luck./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
