I inherited a lawn tractor/mower from a neighbor. Hadn't run in 2 years. Went online to Amazon and got a carb, air and oil filter, and spark plugs for like $25. That was 2 seasons ago and it's still running strong. FWIW.

1. Go to https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/search/type/model/term/4640, and find the part number of the item you need.
2. Go on eBay and enter "Deere [item]", and if it's a common part, you'll find a few aftermarket options. Often, if it's a tractor manufactured by a third party for Deere, you'll find the OEM part at half the cost of the Deere-badged variant of the same.
3. Also check Messick's (always) and Green Parts Store, for the same.
4. If you select your local dealer in https://partscatalog.deere.com, then you can add items to your cart there, and your dealer will email you their pricing on the item, if not already listed on the site.
Do know that parts for a 30 year old machine are going to be expensive. Deere increases their pricing on parts for each year out of production, to reflect the increased cost of carrying old inventory, and the reduced economy of scale due to dropping demand for very old parts. It is very likely some of the parts on a machine that old could be more expensive than the machine is worth. Deere is already a premium-priced brand on new stuff, and New Old Stock (NOS) parts only go up with age.

Imo before loading up on new parts I'd do a compression check making sure your not balls deep in a basket case. In my experiences with older stuff it's usually a simple bypass of a safety device, more recently was a clogged fuel shutoff valve coming out of tank before fuel filter on a old JD 260 with a Kawasaki. I forget the name of it, but in Muncie Indiana there’s a Kawasaki replacement dealer that sells parts I believe
