Grapefruit to me, always tastes like it is a poison my body wants to reject.
So much so, than when I was dating, I would ask if she liked grapefruit.
If she did like grapefruit.... well... there wasn't a second date. Something HAS to be incompatible there on a genetic level.

I have never found a good way to prepare Brussel Sprouts. Or pair them with any other sort of food.
I don't know why we eat them. I don't know why we grow them.

Fish Sauce makes me ill. It smells like vomit.

To drink a lambic beer, has to be a cultured taste. To me, it is everything that could go wrong with a beer batch. How does one possibly say there is a good or bad lambic beer if they are all terrible?
I have ALWAYS liked grapefuit, but it used to be a nuisance to cut open, separate out the pieces, etc. but no more. Now i get the big jugs of grapefruit pieces, alreay sliced, with even a light sweetening. And I have a big jug of it in the refrigerator right now. But my wife never touches it. I am also quite fond of Brusell Sprouts, but my wife doesn't care for them.

Fish Sauce and lambic beer?? I don't even know what those are.

I like fish sauce (think Vietnamese food), Certain Lambics and grapefruit.
I can't eat grapefruit anymore as it messes with my heart medication.

Brusellsprouts, Wash, remove bad leaves, cut in half. Cover with Olive Oil and salt and put in oven to bake until just a bit crispy. Only way I like them. Took me years to find this simple recipe, otherwise I would not eat them either.

Still hate Okra...

Hate okra? Understandable I reckon, but I love it. Okra was also my first money crop when I was about 12 years old. We had a windmill that could not pump the well dry, so I could leave it running. I planted two LOOONNNG rows of okra running very slightly downslope from very near the windmill, laid a gardent hose at one end of my okra and let it run all the way to the other end. I cut okra every other day and took it into town to sell to the two grocery stores in town.

I still love fried okra, and I'll eat stewed or pickled; just not as fond of that as I am the fried okra.

No Okra = no Gumbo, so definitely a necessity.

I love okra too. We ate or canned all of ours; it was dill weed from our garden that I sold to the grocery store.

Brusselsprouts, remove disgusting parts, stare at empty hand. 😉

Okra doesn't grow up here and I seldom see it in the store. I do keep some frozen for when I make gumbo, which I love.

I'm not a big fan of chocolate - not allergic, just don't particularly care for the taste.

Go ahead and say it (I've heard it most if my life).
You're not the only one. I won't eat chocolate chip cookies. They just taste bitter to me. I won't eat dark chocolate in any form. Milk chocolate has been extensively modified and I can eat that. My daughter was allergic to chocolate in her teens and seems to have grown out of it. Her husband is still allergic to it so we rarely do anything with chocolate when they're around.

My Mom used to make “spaghetti“ sauce from ketchup, with a very small bit of oregano, and garlic added.

One, of the exes, whose mother was first generation from Italy, made sauce from two large cans of crushed tomatoes with basil, two pound of pork shoulder cut in cubes, and a clove of garlic. She simmered it until the pork turned to rags, and the garlic disappeared, adding cheap red wine to thin it as it thickened. Didn’t brown the pork first to add flavor, no added basil, nothing added. BLAND IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.

A lot of cooks in the heartland, havent been exposed to the foods brought in by the other immigrants, and still cook basic meat and potatoes, with little variation.
Just imagine Italian cooking without tomatoes. Spaghetti, lasagna etc...

Tomatoes are a New World fruit. Even when the first explorers got to the America's, most thought tomatoes were poisonous. Europeans did not eat them for some time after. Until the 1690's, it was thought to be a poisonous member of the nightshade family.
