I bought a set of the Duo grip chains for my 35 hp JD with R4's and it rides really rough. Rocks you back and forth hard. I tried making sure they were equally placed on each side so they rotated around in the same position but its really bad. Ive never had the duo grip type of chains before just ladder style on our bigger tractors but wanted to try these on our smaller tractor. Is there anything I can do to help this and make it a little better?

Fill the tires if they are not already. I would think that that would help some.

You may be able to add crosslinks to smooth out the height difference.

R-4 tires are already rough without chains. You should be used to it by now. As Egon said or switch your tires to R-3's. They are a lot softer riding tire.

Wow - I don't know. I had heavy duty tractor V-bars on R-1 tires and my little Ford 1700 4WD rode like a COB. I had V-bars on all four and it would climb right up the side of a barn - if you could tolerate the ride over to the barn. It had filled rear tires too.

The only time it rode half way descent was in deep mud or soft ground.

I agree. My V-bars are ridiculously rough. Stopped using them.

Rough ride is part of what you get. Lower the inflation to the lowest possible pressure that will keep the tires on the beads.

Adding crosslinks that are angled between ladders or straight between ladders will give a much smoother ride. Quite easy to do with the proper links.

That is what I did on a Kubota B7100 with Vbars & added front wheel chains. That handled snow, ice, dirt and mud very nicely.

cthorson32, I had the same concern with my DUO's and modified them to H-pattern as shown in this thread:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...-chains-planned-modifications.html?highlight=

It significantly improved traction and made the ride smoother. I still had a problem until I closed the end gap with a full H-pattern instead of single cross chains (as shown in the last post in the thread). The H-patterns corrected a problem of the chains shifting from side to side when using straight cross chains. I was able to make the H-pattern fit across the end gap by using shorter pin couplers (as opposed to full length links) to attach the end pattern to the side chain.

I find pin couplers as mentioned in this post:

...more convenient that other methods for connecting chain ends.

The only time I ever think my chins ride rough is when I'm using them in a place where they are not necessary. In the mud and snow it's doesn't seem like an issue.
