Is this a \'drag\'?

I found an 'attachment' layin' up against a tree a few weeks ago. I know it's pulled behind the tractor using chains. It has 50 'spikes' that are about 1/2 inch square and about 8 inches long. Some are missing. It's apparently an old piece of equipment, judging by the looks..The spikes are adjustable up/down and their angle is controlled, too, from digging 'in' to dragging 'over'. I used it a bit to quickly knock down an area overgrown with weeds. What I'd like to know is...what is this 'thing' called, and what is the proper use for it? The frame is about 3 x 5 feet. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I am not an expert by any means but it sounds like what you have is called a harrow(sp?).

Yup, a spike toothed harrow, but often called a drag as well.

You can get the teeth from farm supply places.

You can use single, but more often are put behind an evener or leveler beam in 2, 4, or more side by side. Best use is when plowing in fall, go over the ground in spring & level it down some, scratch up the ground a bit but not with a big heavy implement in wet ground. Also after seeding oats, wheat, etc you can level the ground & cover the seeds. Also after planting corn or soybeans, you can wait until the day before the crop pokes through & harrow the field - removes the young weeds.

And 100 other uses, for light scratching & leveling.

Be real careful using them with a chain for a hitch. That is how they are used, but if you turn too short & the tire catches the chain, it will pull the harrow up & over against the ROPs. In the old days there were no ROPs, so the driver got really hurt - happened a lot.

Wow, over $300 for that 3-point one in the link????? They sell for $10 - 20 a section here in southern Minnesota at farm sales - no 3-point attachment, but....
