I am thinking of buying a compact tractor for my 9 acres. I foung a 2003 Challenger MT 265 w/100 Hrs on it It has the ML30 bucket and a JD 4ft brush hog on the back...I got the owner down to $ 18000

I don't know a thing about the challanger tractors.. but I do know that 18k$ will buy alot of new name brand tractor with loader and mower.. probably 5' mower too.. not 4'.

Probably get a NH 30hp tractor with loader and mower for 15k and under.. and big 3 brand, full warranty.. etc...

The Challenger is made by Massey Ferguson and should be a good tractor. However, you may be able to buy the equivalent Massey for new for less money. Check out the Masseys if you have a dealer near you. Just look for one with the same HP and equal equipment. I don't know the crossover model exactly, but it should be an Iseki engine. John

Ok, the MT265 is 33 hp. That would be equal to the Massey Ferguson 1433. I agree with John and Soundguy about getting a new machine for about that much. Is the MT265 you're looking at hydro or gear? I'll give the link to AGCO's website:

Tarheel Tractors, on Ebay, is showing New Holland TC30's (gear models) starting at $10,800 with your choice of tires, brand new with full warrenties. They list them with Great Bend FELs for $13,700. New TC29's with the NH 7308 FELs are listed at $15,700. Corriher's, also on Ebay, is showing brand new New Holland tractors at similar prices. They also have a TC24DA (hydrostat transmission, 24hp) for $11,799. Corriher's 60" rotary cutter is priced at $625 new. That leaves a lot of money remaining for more brand new implements, even after you pay for shipping costs to get the tractor & rotary cutter.

I'd say that the Challenger must be one heck of a great tractor for you to be willing to pay $18,000 for a used unit with a used 4' rotary cutter.

Actually the Caterpillar Challenger, Massey Ferguson, and the AGCO compact tractors are all built by Iseki. I spoke with one Caterpillar dealer about them and they seemed to think alot of them. They wanted $6000 more than the equivalent MF model.
