Diesel fuel is $4 a gallon here. My used motor oil is FREE. Everybody got that?

I just said I choose not to use used motor oil, too much bad stuff in it. My used hydraulic fluid is PRE-PAID too. Everyone gets to make their own choice, what a great county! Actually, in this part of NC (might be the whole state, don't know) only diesel is allowed to be used. I wish the law had been written as "clean petroleum distillates". I have asked the enforcers of this law about used hydraulic fluid, they are OK with it as in they won't write me a ticket.

TracTrac, good point on the leaf blower, it's a great tool. So is a tractor with a FEL for compacting the fire but care is needed since the price of failure is high. Love the propane idea.

and i am thinking to myself. i hope non of my neighbors around me catches the farm on fire, again!

i just hope a 10 foot wide path, i try and keep mowed down. through and around the pasture and around lakes. helps as some what of a barrier. or at least slows down a fire.

but when ya see corn stalks, or bean stalks. smoking across the field. ya know your in trouble. and bigger trouble. when ya know neighbors approx 100 acre field. still has crops in it from year before with bunch of weeds to boot growing in it.

Back when we had a dozer and trackhoe for hire, when we got ready to burn our bunched piles. We used a pump sprayer and sprayed diesel fuel around the base of the piles. It works well to get them lit. Theres not much waste to the fuel spraying it thru the pump sprayer.Lutt

Not the safest way, but I usually dump plenty of diesel on it, then light a newspaper. Then from a distance I toss a small amount of gasoline on the burning paper, usually a partially full water bottle.

Very effective. A road flare would certainly be safer.

never use Gas to dump on the fire or wood before you light it (or after). the vapors will ignite, it's not pretty. You will probably be ok, but you'll singe your eyebrows and be scared senseless.

Early morning, lots of dew, no wind also works well.

I much agree with the dew comment. We prefer starting brush piles at dusk when the dew point is high and the wind is low. If any embers were to drift away they're easy to spot in the darkness. Another safe idea to keep fire from spreading, we allow the fire to burn away from the pile about 6-10 feet to remove any fuel (grass).

I see you are in auburn. I am in Alabama as well. I have never over the years had a brush pile spread at all. The humidity is just too high around here.

But I do avoid burning on particularly windy days or after it's been dry. But my point is they are hard enough to start around here in the first place, unless you had it sitting out drying.
