I got out a couple of days ago playing with my tractor.
I made two passes in the ditch across the road.
One pass up a few hundred yards, then one pass back.
Wasn't much to mow, I was just playing mostly.
This is what I had when I got back and parked the tractor.

Is this normal. Been a long time since I mowed with a tractor.
I don't have a guard on the front of the mower.
The blades stick out a little as they come around.

I don't reckon this buildup is really a problem.
Just wondering about it.

Thanks.

Am I bieng paranoid, or is that situation pretty scary looking? Blades come out a bit in front of deck?!? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You NEED a guard on that or you're gonna get a rock thrown at the back of your head!! Possibly injuring or even KILLING you, Bear.

BTW there should be a cover on the driveshaft too.

Yeah, I been wondering about that too.
When I was mowing the ditch it grabbed an old milk jug
and slung it really hard across the road. Like a cannon ball.
I'm thinking about how to add a guard to the front of it.

I don't understand how it could not have the blades stay under the deck.
But that's the way it works.

If it don't rain too much tomorrow I'll try to get a picture.

What would be the purpose of a cover on the driveshaft.

I don't know how far out the blades come, but I would extend the front of the deck and add a skirt of conveyor belting or similar. Other option is to shorten the blades a little(Maybe they are the wrong ones for that machine)
As for the guard on the PTO shaft it is to prevent it catching your pant leg and inhaling your testicles. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The spinning drive line could also pick up debris and start throwing things around too. Plastic sheath/cover for the shaft and u-joints is cheap at any "Big Box" farm supply store. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The pto shield helps prevent you from being would up in the shaft.

here's a pic of a guard I made out of truck mudflaps

Oh, the mice in my barn really love it when I leave my mower sit over the winter with grass like that on it. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif This last spring I had 4 different "families" of mice nesting on my mower. Great. My kids and wife saw them and said that I just couldn't "kill the little baby mice". /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I just transplanted them. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

got to save the mice for the family cat. It's like playing Nentendo to them. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Soundguy, I like your mud flap conversion. Before I had a cab tractor, I'd been beaned on the back of the head a few times when mowing. I figured the cab would stop that non-sense. However, on second thought, a busted glass in the cab would be mighty 'spensive! I need to find me some old discarded mudflaps now! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I went out today and got some pictures.
In the left picture I circled where the blade sticks out.
And in the right picture I drew a yellow line across the BH.

I put a page together of my house and surrounding neighborhood.

Nothing should extend beyond the deck!! That's part of the reason for all that grass on top. If your brush hog is made like most, it has 3 blades. The center blade is nothing more than just a bar and then you have a cutting blade that bolts on each end (3 blades). The cutting blades are not fixed and must be allowed to spin on their mount bolt. They are swung out by centrifucal force. In any case, I think that someone may have put the wrong size cutting blades on your deck. Check with your local implement supply and they should be able to help with the right blade selection.

I'm having a hard time picturing this 3 blad concept here.

Most rotary cutters in the 5-6' range simply use a blade carrier and 2 swinging blades on the edges of the blade carrier. Some models have a stump jumper as the blade carrier. It's hard to use the wrong size blade as there may be side deck clearance problems. More than likely someone has cut the front of his deck back.. or removed some lip that may have held a guard.

On my 5' KK mower, the blade will come out perhaps a quarter inch past the front of the deck.. meaning that a hanging chain guard must be offset forward to use.. or there will be blade contact.

Some finish mowers use a fixed blade design.. and may emply 3 blades.. I'm just not sure I've ever seen a 3 blad rotary cutter. Got any pics of what you describe?
