I have a new TC40D. I notice that there is a repeating noise that comes from the area of the hydraulic filter on the left hand side that sounds like (and I apologize in advance) "pth, pth, pth," etc. - almost like an exhaust leak, but not as loud. Is this normal? - just hydaulic fluid coursing through the lines/filter? - maybe I have air in the hydraulic lines(?). Everything operates absolutely perfect and I have detected no leaks of any sort.

The beauty of tractor hydraulic systems is that they will bleed the air off by themselves. You will not have to do it manually. As far as the sound goes, you could try another comparable tractor at your dealer and listen to it.

"Pat"?
Sounds like you had the answer all along. Are you trouble shooting from the seat or radiator? There are two books (machanics). Let me know if I am wrong. I thought filters were on the left when faceing the radiator. Exhaust to the right. If you hear a wop, wop, wop. That might be a belt. Look for black soot or paint burn around your exhaust manifold. I have not heard of any cracked ones.
You can't use a Fluke. Well you can, but it will cost a little more than what I will descibe. I like to know what it is. I have used a screw driver with handle at ear. Keeping animals around provides me with a stethoscope. There is also a stethoscope for machanics. The sound pick up or "mic" is a metal like prod. If you find by driving other similar rigs that the sound is normal, the right tool is still used for wellness after many hours on the meter. No different from a soundness check when buying a new horse. Having a Doc check the kids. I suffer with a little tone deafness. We can't always see what we want without an aid.
On the TC40 with the hood up, you might be hearing 4 cylinders breathing in. It's that little thing just above the radiator that feeds air to your filter canister.
If you feel spongy-ness in any cylinders, you may have air.
If it makes funny sounds just sitting there and not running, call the vet.

Pat, there is a spring loaded ball valve in the assy. the filter screws into. This is the inlet filter for oil coming from the sump and going to the hydrostat, and I believe the valve is a pressure maintaining valve, so when you are idling, it doesn't stay open constantly and you are hearing the "pth" sound when there is enough pressure to lift the ball valve. Beyond that, I can't offer much, but there was anothe thread about this awhile back and you are one of many people who have noticed the sound. My hearing is weak, or I probably would have heard it on my TC45D. I have the illustrated parts catalogue which shows this valve. It doesn't say what it is for. Inthe hydro section of the maintenance manual I have not yet discovered a complete description of the valves operation. I think you can take Hawgee's advice and relax. Just think of the sound as indicating everything is working right./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

We had a B-17 fly over today. I missed Saturdays. Could have been the Texas Air Force. Heading west @ 3000ft and sounding light. He had just come over "Snoqualmie Falls". I would hate to think he just came out of our local field. Probably Boeing and the Museum of Flight in Seattle. The sound of the 4 engines made me miss the Thunder boats on Lake Washington running for the Gold Cup before turbines. That plane had a lot of Dads in it. Past and present.
Books. I was wondering what you have beyond the owners manual jinman. I have not asked my dealer about this. I remember stacks of Binders going out with the State or County rigs. For the owners, operators, and machanics. No mutimedia, but mayby in time. I thought the "Shop" version would help me beyond what the auto industry throws in the glove box. I like knowing more about the equipment than where the drain is.
Thanking you.

Hawgee, you can order the Repair Manual and Service Parts Catalogue from the order form in the back of the Owner's manual or online ordering is available also at:

http://www.newholland.com/na/shopping_cart/main.asp

I ordered online and had the manuals delivered to my house by UPS in about two weeks. The cost of the parts manual is $31.20 and the other manuals (three book set) is $204.00. With shipping and tax that is a whopping $259.42. Ouch!/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. If I had known the price, I would probably have tried to negotiate for the books at the time I bought my tractor. Oh well.../w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif. Hope this helps.

Jim, I too was wondering about that noise and posted about it some time ago under a discussion on the manuals. I described it more as a rattle or buzzing sound and at first thought it was the starter bendix, but by putting my hand on the tubing and filter head assembly, narrowed it down to the lines or head. Wondered if it wasn't something just like you described. Too bad, NH couldn't come up with a design that doesn't have the annoying noise. Thanks for the info. Duane

There seems to be so much interest in this that I will post a scan of the illustration and any description I can find; probably toward the middle or end of the week. Once it's posted, we can just link someone to the post at a later day. I'm sure this is going to be a recurring question. Just be patient, I'm a little old and slow. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Duane and all, lets give this noise a name. The valve on the top of the HST filter is the HST Cooler Check Valve. If this is what is making the noise, it must be because the oil is not hot. According to the Repair Manual (see attachment) the valve opens when there is 17.5 psi of pressure across the cooler. This would be because the oil doesn't need cooling (I think). I hope this clears up the "phantom noise" problem.

Jinman - that is the most logical reason I have heard or seen for the noise yet. Makes perfect sense.
Pat - don't worry about the noise as others have said it was the subject of ealier posts & it is normal.
