And folks saying I'm ramming fixed objects.

I was looking for a technical reason and I believe there is none. This normal direction you ram in to snow, gravel or what ever to scoop it up.[/quote]

I'm with you on this one.. I use my FEL to cut/ remove 3-4 " stumps / roots.... They usually are not a completely fixed object, there is alittle give to them till they break free...

Although I think that that ramming roots is a little harder on the machine than into a gravel pile. There is alot more give there...But ice on the other hand is pretty rough on the machine and after last years New englnad ice storm, I gave my fel quit a work out....

OH BTW, I don't wax my tractor!!!:D

I was cruising on my gravel road today with BoxBlade.

It was popping out 100lb boulders every now and then like water mellon seeds. Hardly even noticed until I looked back and saw it.

Anyway I was cruising along in 8th gear and suddenly the tracker completely stopped cold. Thought it was a huge boulder so I backed up raised boxblade just a bit and tried to go forward and it would not budge.

So I raised it full backed over it and it was a huge root.

So I used the FEL to cut it.

I rammed it slowly in low gear and it didn't cut.

Then I rammed it a little faster (maybe 4th gear pedal to metal).

And it snipped off fine.

Bucket was about flush with ground.

Is this really hard on pistons?

Or is this normal par for the course for the tractor?

I have done a lot of things harder on my equipment than that and haven't broken anything yet. I do just about everything with mr FEL's that the manual warns against. I have tractors to do work and if they won't hold up, I will buy something that will or pay the rapair bills. My father in law used his tractors with FEL like dozers and while he broke the arms and had to reinforce and repair a lot of things, he never damaged a cylinder.

I like this site it has taught me alot of things I'd didn't know.Been in business for over 30 years and broke many things includes the cylinders on my fel. I have found out what has cause it. Not going fast enought or ramming thing...well just pay off my last tractor of 14 so now with no payment I wont have to baby them...or wax them once a month.....cant wait for Monday to see what they mean by balls to the wall.....ps something must have happen to have to ask after 2 years to see if you are doing something wrong

Would a 100 pound rock really qualify as a 'bolder'? :)

Anytime somebody is talking about 'ramming' something it makes it sound like something uncontrolled and erratic.

Does that describe what you were actually doing?

My guess is probably not.

Exactly, poor choice of words

i'll add pics

The road measures .6 miles long.

I put my sneaker (Size 11) next to the "bolders" to give you an idea of the size. F

Never got one stuck in the boxblade. It just snags it and rolls out out onto the top of the road.

Turns out most of them were in the same section and had noticed that until I went looking. First picture that shows the road is where most were. Doesn't any different than the rest of the road.

Couldn't find the root, tossed it into the woods. Couldn't toss the bolders so easy :)

I have snap shot showing the material in the road too.

Last picture is the hill I tried to cook the brakes with. Pic does not capture how steep it is.

Ok-- I have a similiar root problem.. and I keep a set of sheers on the tractor..
Often if I see some I run down the drive with the ATV and work on em..
As for the rocks-- same story here..
BUT I gather them up and use them in the ditches as breaks..
kinda like growing my own rather than the $300 load of rock for this..

As for the ramming thought-- I have the same idea once-- but then I thought-- If it does not cut the root, there is a chance it may pull it and make a mess. so I use the shears...

maybe shears is not a good word.. they have extention handles and can cut up to 3 or 4 inches thick.....

be careful and good luck...

How do you keep the "light duty box blade" from just lifting up and over the large rocks?

I have Bush Hog BX 60 BB and even smaller rocks (softball size) will lift the blade up and over the offending rocks...
