I think you will need at least a 16 ft. trailer, preferable a 18 or 20 ft.

The shorter the trailer, the less room you are going to have to try and put the weight over the trailer wheels, therefore you are going to have more tongue weight.

Trailer prices over the past 3 years or so have gone WAY up! We used to sell your standard 6 1/2 x 16 ft. trailers for $700, now the exact same trailer goes for a little over a $1,000.

But if you are dead set on getting that trailer I think $500-600 might be a fair offer.

First of all you say you would not pay new price for a well used trailer. I don't think you have shopped for trailers lately. For hauling your tractor and implement totaling 6000# you are going to need at least an 18' 10K rated double axle trailer with brakes on both axles and a minimum of a half ton pick up to tow with. Also a tractor with implement is going to take up more space than the 14'er you are looking at. The trailer you're looking at may be good for the tractor to tow around your yard but not to haul it on the road. I'm sure glad I live far enough away from the present owner if he hauls cars on it and it has no brakes. Even a 7K car trailer would be overloaded if you put 6K on it. I'd pass on that trailer and look for a real one.

I couldn't post pics, buy I have a feeling that you would not have paid new price for THIS used trailer either. I think you're right on needing a larger trailer with brakes. I kind of feel that the guy had no idea how risky his towing was, and neither did I till some of the responses here. I offered 300, he strongly refused, and that was the end of that.

hi folks, I saw a WELL USED (some rust) 14 foot wood bottom trailer, double axles, no brakes, but with working lights, with a sturdy built frame for 1,450.00. The trailer wheels/tires had been replaaced with wheels and tires off of a buick car. (??) so car tires, not light truck tires. I need to haul 5,000 pounds of tractor, and a thousand pounds of implement. I told the guy there was no way I would pay new price for a well used trailer. it still had some black paint from the factory on the sides...I am thinking about offering him 300 bucks, and sorry no pics, but just wanted to get some ideas about value. Can anyone help? he said he had hauled cars with it.

go to ebay and price trailers there. I know that you can get a lot of trailer in arkansas for 1,450.00 and that is a new trailer so I think his price is a bit High. You could offer him 300 i would be suprised if he took it the axles would cost over 400.00 alone to buy. A lot of the trailer sales around where I live use used car tires on trailers when you buy them new . I use car tires on my trailer and have done that for years. I am going to switch to load range d tires the next time I switch because my new tractor is heavier. I have however hauled cars or my massey ferguson 65 on my 16 foot trailer with just regular car tires on it and did that for years with no problems. A lot of the posters are talking about length and I agree with them a 14 foot trailer is pretty short to be hauling a tractor and implements unless it is a very small tractor.

I think finding tires for those rims would be difficult and then if/when you back it, you'd better know how to back a trailer because that thing will turn fast behind a pickup truck. Looks like the bed would need to be modified (longer) for a tractor, then lengthen the tongue while your at it.

Any ideas what he used it for (bulldozer) or ???

no idea, just thought with all the post on here about what trailers are going for now days that one was way over priced in my book. i just did a bid for a 10 foot single axel for 400.00. ill use it for my lawn business and get all the stuff off of my car hauler and make it more tractor friendly.

A cost data point: I just bought a new 20', 5 ton with brakes on both axles. Cost was $2475. It was the best deal I could find. Most others were $3300 - $3900. Used ones are either beaten to death or they want a lot for them (if you can find them at all). I looked at one used one where he wanted $1400. It needed new brakes. Was a rust bucket. Several welds broken on fenders, etc. Needed a new jack. Tires were fair at best. Since I have enough projects to work on, I just gave up on used and bought new.

Unless I badly miss my guess, that trailer is built off a house trailer frame. The tongue looks like it, as does the subframe. Looks like it's just had a box or channel framed deck welded over it. Trailers typically come with 16.5" tires, and "pinch-bolt" wheel attachment, which are impossible to get correctly tightened. I assume he's talking about a 2 5/16" ball - never heard of 2 5/8". Also, the tall deck makes loading and unloading a short-wheelbase tractor a risky proposition, IMO.
