Not sure, but it would make you pretty dishonest. I'm pretty honest to those I deal with and expect the same from those that I deal with as well. So no not going to be telling 1 dealer something that is not true.
As a matter of fact I bumped up my price a few hondo's because I was honest. I did not realize the gp tires and seat was absent on one quote, but they were able to beat that quote by $500 and I don't have to go anywhere to get it shipped or picked up!

It's perfectly OK to play dealer's off one another and to shop around, and to make sure the dealer knows it. I'd avoid making up figures and lying though. I think it's always best to keep a good relationship with dealers, but to let them know you shop around, do your research and will not be taken advantage of. Actually it's the latter that is most important. If my dealer knows I know the going price and wholesale price of anything they sell, they aren't going to try to jack up the price on a pair of forks or a rear remote kit. That's more valuable than saving a few quid on the initial sale.

So be polite, be honest, do your homework and ask alot of questions. I usually take notes and write down names as well. It sends a message that they can't just talk out of their ***, like many dealers (especially car) are known to do.

Sure it would!

That don't mean I expect the dealer to take a loss on the tractor. I'm simply trying to find out what I can get for my hard earned money. If I want to give money away, I'll give it to my Mom. She needs it more than a tractor dealer. That said; I know he won't take a loss.

I had a friend that was a used car salesman, and I've heard him bragg about cleaning the customers clock. I've also had salesmen show me an invoice, claiming that's what they paid for the item in question. Trying to prove they were selling it, to me, for less than they paid for it. Once I began to question them about their invoice, they actually admitted that they don't pay the full invoice. It's simply used as a sales gimmick.

Granted, it would be nice if everyone gave you the straight dope, but that's not gonna happen. Most dealers mark up around 20 to 30%, or more. That's for tractors, cars, or anything else you buy. This also helps cover a trade in. In other words, it makes it look like they're giving you a good price on your used item.

I've actually called the old owners, of used cars I've bought, to check on any problems. The first question they ask me is "what are they asking for my old car". When I tell them the bottom dollar, they can't believe it; because they say I'm getting it for less than they were given on their trade. Thousands less! Simply put, the dealer made them think they were getting a good price for their trade-in; but the dealer had actually marked the new one up in order to give the trade-in away, for chicken feed. Now, who do you think felt like a piece of shiet?

I went and looked at a Kubota, and got the price down more than two thousand dollars - within just a few minutes. He was also willing to throw in a free tooth bar for the FEL, free thumb for the BH, load the rear tires for free, and throw in a free Box Scraper. Simply because I had looked at the same model Kubota on the other side of town. I didn't even tell him what the other guy was asking. He asked, but I wouldn't tell him. He simply knew what was possible. Do I think he was selling it for a loss? Absolutly not.

I bought a CT225 last year here in WI when there was only 1 dealer in town...

CT225 with 68" loader bucket, 66" mid mower, grill guard, deluxe package $17293 delivered to my door with 0% for 42 months
