FarmWithJunk, Right on, man! I used to travel in the "outback" of Mexico, often Baja. I never seemed to have the problems that other gringos seemed to find in abundance. Of course I never expected slowly shouted English to be more understandable to a Mexican. No pidgin English gleaned from the adventures of the Lone Ranger and Tonto: Me wantum heap much gasoline!!! Never be condescending, always be polite whether or not you have to or not and even if you think the other guy isn't. That said...
Sales people who use politeness as a club to beat you over the head rather than to try to figure out why you are upset or demanding or unsatisfied come closer to getting a BLAST out of me than an incompetent who is at least trying to help you. If I return a parrot to the boutique that sold it to complain that the parrot was dead and the only reason it had been sitting on its perch is because it had been nailed there, I expect more than sorry sir, no returns and it has beautiful plumage, HAVE A NICE DAY... NEXT PLEASE!
(apologies to Monty Python))
Unfortunately there are plenty of SMALL people who believe that if they are the customer and THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT then somehow they are ROYALTY and can use their lofty position to be above the seller in status and rank. They are in charge and if they are not catered to they may withhold their gold ($1.19 or whatever.) Small minded people in whatever role or position often seize opportunities to attempt to wield power and to try to be important. It is a sad but true thing.
It is hard for sales folk (who are just human) to put up with this crap day after day and NOT lump all customers together as THE ENEMY. Those who can "maintain" their optimism and congeniality in the face of so many bozos tend to be more successful.
