Billy,
Yes the SN could give us an idea, but not an absolute for a couple of reasons.
1. Serial numbers can start at anything. Again to increase positive perceptions. No no one except a collector wants a low SN, the bugs might not be worked out. So therefore start the numbering at say 2000....The company I used to work for did this.

2. If we go by sales numbers worldwide I suspect that Mahindra and some of the Chinese tractors will rate pretty high because of sales in their home countries and other worldwide locations.

Another question, Are we just counting new units sold ? or total units out there being resold, etc...

How would anyone know about 2nd + owner sales for anything? I'd think you'd have to go by new units sold.

Manufacturers belong to reporting organizations such as "Association of Equipment Manufacturers" & Farm Equipment Manufacturers Association. To belong to these organizations requires a member manufacturer to report sales on a monthly basis. They record the sales by model category and link each sale to a zip code. The member companies pay big money for these statistics of market share. Also realize not every MFG is a member and their sales figures and not included in market share reports. But some missing data is also available from government import statistics. There are marketing companies that compile this data and sell it. So you will not fine one tell all report somewhere on the net. It takes about 5 different source reports to come up with a total market report.

My dealer who is a large New England dealer was a Ford New Holland dealer since 1950 and added Kubota a number of years ago. Now in the CUT area Kubota outsells New Holland for him. When I asked why, he told me that Kubota spends a lot more on advertising. As far as quality, he ranks the 2 brands equal. In the utility tractor business, New Holland outsells Kutoba by a wide margin at his dealership.

ANDY: i have notice the same thing. i live in a rural (farming area) and seems like kubota has a fair share of the sub cuts and cuts, but when you get into the bigger units it seems JD and MF are more of what i see

Although I have no idea what the numbers are in the US, in Canada for 2003 it was JD 30%, Case 17% NH 15% MF 11% Kubota 10% and misc for the rest, most of which I assume would be various AGCO tractors. For the compacts I couldn't find them but assume it to be the same as the US numbers posted earlier.

I stopped by the local John Deere and Kubota dealer the other day and looked at his lawn and garden display room in the basement. I saw at least 15 new L & G Deere's and 1 Kubota in the back corner.
