Is your acreage enough?

We always dreamed of land in the country. When we sold our home in town, we were looking at 5 acre lots in the same county that is going like crazy. We stumbled onto this place just over the line, and have 75 acres. 5 more are fenced into it, and I still haven't found the owner. Oh, well...

I have a neighbor that I can actually see their house amd another one half a mile down the road. They are both wonderful - it would actually be nice to see them once and a while...

The hard thing was finding a property with a useable house, that wasn't 5 feet from the road. Ours is set back about 300'.

I think what really makes it work is not having folks right on top of us.

My husband and I initially thought we'd purchase 10-20 acres but purchased 116 acres this past summer. We definitely have room to grow and plenty to do. Our closest neighbor is 6/10 of a mile away. Thankfully, everyone on the road seems to value their privacy and have no desire to see a developer come in.

That' what he had hoped to do. 10 - 20 would have been just fine for us. What we found out is that there is a huge price difference from 5 acres to 10. From 10 acres to 100, the price goes up, but not as dramatically.

My wife lived in Davie florida ( ft. laudercale ). and had wetlands at her back fence . 5 years after she bough the place, state reclassified the land, and it became a strip mall and car lot... go figure.

We moved to summerfield and bought a couple pieces of land real close together, and would probably like 20 instead of 13.. but whatever happens.. I'm glad I've got the 13 anyway.

Man, some of the posts in this thread make me green with envy. Some lucky folks have some really nice sounding property.

I let a few acres grow this year after discing ip up in febuary.. and I it got out of hand.. like 7' tall rag weed and dog fenel.. I mowed yesterday for 5 hours ( 3rd range 1st gear on my NH 1920 ) and am still having an alergy attack..... and I'm only 1/2 to 1/3 done...
sheesh...

It is for now. Last year I was looking for about 50 acres. Ended up buying 273. It's kept me plenty busy this year fencing, road building, planting food plots, etc. When the house gets finished (hopefully mid next year) we'll start the barn. May need a haybarn by spring. Planted 13 acres oats and 10 acres rye on Saturday. Start planting wheat this weekend in the upper field. Dam is being rebuilt with the new spillway & pipe to be installed mid-week. So more acreage means lots more work. Over 500 hrs tractor time this year so far.

I own 6 acres but wish I had 50, my wife and I are considering moving if a promotion comes my way I told her she can build any type of house she wants my only requirements are at least 10 acres of land. If money were no object I would love to purchase a 50 to 100 acre tract.

We got tired of living cramped on a 1/4 ac lot, and bought some land.. deal was she could build HER house, and we needed at least 10 ac.. ended up with 13.. would have liked 20, and will try to aquire it.. but may not. Land here is a bit high even for pasture.

I, for one, have all the land I need and would love to sell about 80 acres. At this stage in my life I am still working and putting kids thru school, and I would like to be doing other things in at least some of my spare time. I have not been able to play golf once this year. Don't get me wrong I enjoy 'farm' work but after mowing the same fields for 35 years I find that it is just not as much fun. I guess having some repair bills on the tractor and brush hog and then burying them deep enough that it took a 4955 MFWD John Deere to pull it out may have something to do with my present attitude. Oh yeah, the Johnny Deer also had to pull out the wrecker which got stuck trying to get me out. Don't know if it is allowed on this forum but if anyone wants to buy a farm on Clarks River in Western Kentucky just let me know.
