ISEKI TU1700F
Hi

I hope you can help. I have an ISEKI TU1700F, which I have owned for several years. I have never had need to use the PTO. I would really like to get it working perhaps to attach a chipper or log splitter.

I have never found an owner's manual, so I have learned what's what by trial and error. I have a lever on the LHS of the tunnel marked PTO 1-2-3, which presumably allows you to set the PTO speed, but what actually engages the PTO? At present it just turns freely if you try to move it, it doesn't seem to be engaged. There is not button or lever anywhere that I can see.

I have a control box on the right hand wheel arch, which two knobs and one lever, but this just seems to level-up the three-point-linkage.

Can anyone with knowledge of the TU1700F help please?

Thanks

Phil

I'm not familiar with the TU1700F but if it has a clutch, normally you push the clutch in, set the PTO to one of the 3 positions and let our the clutch to engage it. If the engine is off you can set the PTO to one of the three settings and it should not turn counter-clockwise (as viewed from the rear of the tractor) when the clutch pedal is released. You may not be able to turn it clockwise either but this depends on if it has an overrunning clutch built-in (good if it does which means you can turn it clockwise at all lever settings by hand). There should be at least one "neutral" position on the PTO selector. If the lever is in these positions it will turn freely in both directions regardless of what the rest of the tractor is doing.

Hi

thanks very much for getting back to me.

I rather suspect it might be somehow disconnected or that it has failed.

I'm not sure that the PTO speed selector has a "neutral" setting. At present, it is possible to spin it clockwise and counter-clockwise whatever else is happening, whether the engine is running or not, and whatever speed setting you have selected. This is what is making me think that there should be a control to engage it or that it is broken.

I have attached a pic of the speed selector switch. There doesn't seem to be a 'neutral' marked.

On my TX1300, there are neutral settings between 1 and 2 and 2 and 3. I can't tell from your picture but yours looks similar. Yes, you probably have some sort of gear box issue if it doesn't engage in any lever setting. Check to make sure the lever is actually rotating the shaft going into the gearbox when you use it (if yours is set up that way, mine is). If it is then you'll probably have to open up the case to troubleshoot and repair it. Not something every tractor owner is thrilled about having to do but it's not the end of the world.

I have a TU1700 that is two wheel drive. I suspect that a snap ring had come free in the rear of tractor. Not hard to check. Remove rear cover off PTO and snap ring (holds shaft that runs PTO) is right inside of case. If this the case it is a very easy fix.

Thanks, that was very helpful. I have checked those two things out:

1) There is a definite neutral, and in fact with the engine running, gearbox in neutral, if I slide the lever from the neutral between PTO speed position 2 and 3 back towards position 3, I can hear the cogs trying to mesh. If I pop the clutch in, of course it slides in fine. This would seem to indicate that the lever is doing something and the gearbox end of the thing is okay?

2) In order to look at the PTO shaft end, as suggested, I would need to remove the cover around the PTO shaft, which is bolted on. To get at these bolts I would need to remove the top link mounting plate at the top, and the tow hitch mounting plate below. I had a quick go at this, but the first bolt I removed caused a hydraulic fluid leak... Can I get in at this without losing my hydraulic fluid?

To be honest, if I had to drain it down, it wouldn't be the end of the world. I have bought the filters and oil to do a full service anyway. I am just a little nervous about draining the gearbox/hydraulic fluid as I have never done it before. Will it all need bled when I fill it back up? I'm only really familiar with changing engine oil, which I suspect is much simpler.

Thanks for your help everyone, I feel like I am making progress.

Sounds like you'll need to go in and see why the output shaft isn't turning. Changing the hydraulic/transmission oil is almost as easy as engine oil. You won't need to bleed anything but you may have to run it for a few minutes after filling to have it self-purge the air which, most of the time, you never really notice happens. The only thing that could be considered a little hard is removing the pickup screen and cleaning it. This is found in the line feeding the pump (the bigger one) in the transmission housing. You'll usually notice at least some metal shavings when you pull the hydraulic/transmission oil screen. I'd recommend using one of those telescoping magnetic pickup tools to go in after you pull the screen to pick up as many remaining shavings as you can. You certainly don't need to do this but the more you can remove while you're at it the longer you can run until the next cleaning.

Many thanks for the advice. I will drain it down when I get a spare 1/2 day and have a look.

I appreciate all your help everyone.

Thanks
