It Bee That Time of Year Again

Figured I'd bring this one back to the top now that I can type again...

I made a couple of interesting and unpleasant discoveries yesterday.

1) Discovered that January is not neccessarily a bee safe month.

2) Discovered that, after 40 years and uncounted numbers of stings, I am now allergic to bee stings.

We've had some unseasonably warm weather this past week or two. This seems to have awakened some of the dormant insects in the area.

When my step-daughter yelled about a big bug in her room, I came to the rescue. Half an hour later I was being treated in the nearest emergency room. (more than half an hour away...) I spent 6 hours heavily doped up and closely observed before the doc would allow my wife to take me away. He has me on oral Benadryl for 48 hours and I have orders to see my family doctor for a prescription for an epipen.

Moral of the story: Watch out for bees even in the middle of winter if the snow melts.

I brought my tractor from the pole barn into the garage to do some work on it. When it warmed up I found one crawling across the fender...

I feel your pain.

I got nailed on the calf on November 1st by a wasp (stung many times before in life). Fortunately, we were walking to the car to go into town when it happened. I also ended up in emergency room. We were at Walmart and I finally had to grab a bottle of liquid Benedril off the shelf and I chugged about 1/2 of the bottle down. The Doc at the emergency room said doing that, probably tempered my reaction a bit and bought me a bit more time to get there. As it was, once I checked in to ER, they had me in the back & stuck with needles in about 120 seconds...

Tomorrow (Wed) I have another appointment with my allergist. We've done the tests and last visit they did a blood sample. Tomorrow we go over the results and decide on a course of action (probably 5 year program getting shots /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

My wife has my epipen upstairs in the bathroom closet next to the extra tube of toothpaste. I'm trying to enlighten her that there just MIGHT be a benefit of perhaps having it a BIT more visible so OTHERS might find it easily in case I'm in a state of need.

hmmm... makes me wonder if she WANTS them to find it?

Darn bees/wasps/other stingers...... I've always been VERY tolerant of having them inside the house but now... they've declared war.

AFTER 64 years on this earth i found out that i NOW have a violent reaction to bee stings, never had them before but i do now, spent a whole day in hospital , then got stung again this past summer, jabed myself with eppi pen and went to hospital, only keept me an hour this time, (due to epie penn injection) also remember that the pens are only good for 1 year then you need a new one and remember to KEEP IT HANDY

But don't keep the epipen too handy. It turns out that the temperature requirements are very stringent. This means that you are NOT supposed to leave it in the glove box or any where else really handy unless it is in a temperature controlled environment. Supposedly the epinephrin decomposes rapidly in the extreme temps.

That being said, I keep one in my glove box because at least it will be there when I need it.

A friend of mine has one and carries it with him. ALWAYS, except in winter. He has a belt holder for it. Bathroom closet will not do you any good when you are away from home at the lawn and garden center, or where ever.

Tell your friend he should have it within reach in winter too...

I'm just glad my wife can drive like a maniac when needed. The doctor at the emerg pointed out that the sore throat I was beginning to feel on arrival was swelling that would have stopped my breathing. He figured I was on time by about 5 minutes.
